Copperhead Problem

My family has a Mountain house in North GA. We planted a flowerbed next to our deck and installed an irrigation system. Deer ate the flower and we then installed deer netting to protect the flower. 1 week later, we discover 6 copperheads (all dead) in the netting. Some were as large as 3 feet long. Until last weekend, we have seen 2 snakes in 25 years up there. Help me understand what is going on!
1) I assume that the snakes are attracted by the irrigation?
2) Do you think we have a den nearby or are we attracting snakes from all over?
3) Do Copperheads Den Up in summer?
4) How old would a 3 foot long snake be?
5) Would you guess the snakes have always been there and the netting has just brought them to our attention or would you guess that we have a fairly recent infestation since we have never seen them before?
6) All the snakes found in netting are dead. Will a snake die from the heat? I am surprised that some were not still alive in the nets.
7) Anybody want to buy a lake house? JK..
8) Can anybody recommend an expert in Rabun County, GA.
Thanks! I have really enjoyed reading through some of the older posts!

I live in North GA and copperheads are pretty common snakes. But I have to ask, Are you sure they were copperheads? Many species of harmless snakes in North GA get mistaken for copperheads all the time. A picture would help ID them for certain. I find it strange that only copperheads were caught and not other species as well. If it is a lake house, I doubt the irrigation attracted them. They are drawn to food, shelter from heat/cold/predators, and water.(and other copperheads during breeding season) They do not den up in the summer. They are not community animals, but an ideal area may attract more than one or many. Hard to say how old a 3 foot copperhead is, their growth depends on many things. With an abundance of food, it could be 2 or 3 years old, some never reach 3 feet. The biggest one I have ever caught was 52". My guess is they were always there. The netting probably killed them from being tangled and cutting off the circulation and/or airway, and maybe over heating if they were in direct sun. I'm not far from Rabun County, in Stephens County. Outside of Toccoa. I get up there pretty often with work, mostly in Clayton. If you want to send a pic to the email on my profile, I can ID anything that gets caught up in the nets for you. The best way to keep them away is a well manicured lawn and nothing laying around for them to hide under. Wood piles, rock piles, logs, brush, trash, etc. And anything that will attract rodents, like animal feed, bird seed, etc will attract snakes. Hope this helps, Marty

Another thing, for 25 years you have been co-existing with them without even knowing it. Just be careful about walking around barefoot outside in warm weather at night, and in the mornings and evenings. Marty

Marty-
Thanks for the feedback. I sent you an email with a few pics. Interested to here your conclusion.
We were up there all weekend and installed a couple of contraptions that send vibrations into the ground. No idea if it will work or not but it gave my family some piece of mind.
I hear you loud and clear on being careful after dark.
We started the process of removing wood piles and debris.

I saw the pics, and you are correct, they are definitely copperheads. Cleaning up woodpiles and things will help keep them away. Marty

Copperheads seem to be particularly bad about getting themselves tangled up in that darn netting stuff - I've had the pleasure of extracting a few. Not easy.

Yep....Removed one from a net this summer. Made me nervous as heck. I sacrificed a lot of that net for safety.
