I was bit by a copperhead over the weekend on my left foot in Raleigh, NC on the way to the movies. At first I wasnt aware it was a snake bite so it was about 2 hours before I went to the ER (I originally thought it was a bad spider bite, it was dark so I didn't see what bit me.) After a while, I noticed that my foot was extremely swollen, which caused me to believe that it might be more than a spider bite.
I went to the ER, where they told me it was in fact a snake bite, probably a copperhead since they are common in NC, and was monitored for about 6 hours and was given anti-nausea (though not feeling nauseous) and pain medication. I didnt need anti-venom or antibiotics, however I did get a tetanus shot to be safe. After being monitored I was sent home to recover with a pair of crutches since walking was painfully unbearable. I was advised to keep it elevated as much as possible but otherwise my foot should be back to normal within a few days/weeks. I experienced a little nausea after being sent home but no vomiting.
Since being home, I have experienced swelling from my left foot all the way up to below my left knee. We went back to the ER later that same day and they said it was expected and I should be ok. Since this weekend, the swelling has gone down a little each day and I can hobble about the house, but the lower part of my leg and foot is still quite swollen and I have some minimal bruising around my ankle. However, a majority of my pain comes when I try to get out of bed in the morning or if I put my foot down on the floor after having it elevated for a while. I experience a sharp pain around my foot/ankle near the bite area for a few seconds, then after a while it subsides. Outside of these instances, I feel no pain at all. Is this to be expected with a copperhead bite? Ive seen several doctors over the past week and most of them told me to take Advil or Tylenol for pain (and just yesterday I was advised by a 3rd doctor that I should wrap it to minimize the swelling, amazingly the ER specifically told me to put nothing on it), but I havent really been able to get a clear answer about anything else I should expect since I dont really live near any "snake bite experts".
How long should the random bursts of pain last? Why the random bursts of pain? When should the swelling go down? Will I suffer any tissue damage? When will I no longer walk like the Hunchback of Notre Dame?

I'm sorry I didn't see this post sooner - are you doing better now? Unfortunately, I don't spend as much time on this excellent site since the rise of Facebook, and I'm sure the same goes for a lot of other folks too. I'm in NC and if you're still having trouble can refer you to someone who can help.
