A co-worker brought me a Pygmy this morning that he came across near his hunting camp. It is about 7" in length and appears very healthy. I plan on releasing it in a day or two after I get some good photos and take some notes on its captive behavior.
My question is: at this stage in its life, what are some common food sources for this species? Frogs? Small lizards or insects? Small rodents, perhaps? Is there anything else I should consider while I have this snake? Thanks in advance for any ideas or advice.
Matt

I have about a dozen of them. I have the best luck with immature mice. At only 7” you will probably need new born pinks. Collected snakes usually require a period of adjustment to captivity before they will feed, if you are planning to release him within a week, you probably shouldn’t even try to feed him. Make sure to keep him quarantined from any other captive snakes you may have to reduce the risk of carrying pathogens back to wild population and of course release as close to the spot where he was collect as possible. Good luck and be careful, they can deliver a very painful bite.

I am VERY familiar with their bite - hence the name "pygmybait". It was not a pleasant experience....I was not actually planning on trying to feed him. I was really just curious about what they would be going for at this point. Thanks for your reply. Matt

Thanks, if they refuse to take pinks straight up, try scenting them with “lizard scent.” It is available at most pet stores. I have had good luck getting Scarlet Kings to accept pinks with this product. It comes in a bottle with a rubber dropper built into the lid. I wash the pink in warm water to remove any strong mouse smells, then put about 3 drops of the lizard scent on the pink. Good luck!

Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake is really beatiful snake. I bought from Reptiles Expo in year 2002 one young specimen (male, CB'2002).
Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius barbouri) is quite tiny and I feed with 1-2 pinkies per week.
My specimen is generally quite peaceful but sometimes be enough for strike I come near his vivarium.
