What is the trick to breeding Western Diamondbacks. I have been keeping them for several years and have had no luck, I would like to hear from people who successfully bread them on a regular basis. Thanks and hope to hear from some different people who knows what the best tricks are for breeding this species!!!

I personally have never bred them myself, but, I have heard from several breeders that multipul males is the way to go. It increases yuor chances of a successfull breeding. Hope this helps.

Hi...
I would say it in another way - How do you manage to keep both a male and a female WDB in the same terrarium without mating ? I have been breeding WDBīs for a while, but I donīt do anything special to make them breed - let them hibernate for at least 2,5 mounths in a temperature around mid 50īs (farenheit) (+15 celcius) feed them and put them togheter... Snakesex is guaranteed !
Are you sure that youīve got a male and a female ?

Yes I am positive that I have a male and TWO females together in the same enclosure. I have an almost 5' male albino, a 4 1/2' very fat regular female and a 3 1/2' pink female being kept all together. I have seen no signs of mating or even the interest in mating. I have not cooled them yet. I have been told by some people that I need to cool them and some people say it's not needed with Atrox. I have also been told that my enclosure is to small, I have them in a 3' X 2' X 1' enclosure at this time. I do plan on putting them in a bigger enclosure, but I just don't have the space right now. I have also been told by a couple people that I may need another male so they can do their combat thing. But if thats the case how do you know who wins the combat and gets to breed the female(s). Because the only one I want to breed is my albino Atrox male. Any further help would be great as I have never tried breeding Atrox before, but I really want to produce my own albinos in the next few years and the sooner I get started the sooner I can produce them. If I cool them what is the best way to do so? How many hours of light and dark do they need, does it matter what months to cool them and so on??? Thanks for the replies fellow herpers and keep em coming!!!!

Hi again...
About noticing any interesting in mating... I usually donīt see any mating procedures from my Crotalus atrox but I have always seen them mating. The matings usually going on for at least 12 hours !
Hibernate... I donīt belive that mating is a very important matter in mating WDBīs, but if they are slow starters youīd better try to hibernate them... When I hibernate my snakes here in Sweden, I just stop feeding them and after 3-4 weeks without food I shut off the light and the heat so that the temperature drops for about 5 degrees celcius per week and whem I reach about 15 degrees celcius (mid 50 farenheit) I put them in seperate plastic containers and keeps them dark for about 2,5-3 mounths. I regulary offer them water but I donīt remember me seeing them drink even once... After 2,5-3 mounths I do the same procedure but backwards, meaning increace the temperatur for about 5 degrees celcius per week till I reach normal temperature. Then itīs time to start feeding them again and I still keep them seperate. When the females has shed their skin itīs time to let them meet the male in his enclosure and the mating is a fact... Remember that this is just my way of hibernate and mating my snakes, but it works fine for me... :o)
If it depends on a too small container... I donīt know about that. I have always kept my WDBīs in huge enclosures for my own safety...
Maybe you need another male, but I donīt think itīs necessary if you hibernate them first, but if you get another fertile male, the biggest and strongest one are the one whoīs getting the price - mating...
So my tip will be - hibernate the snakes and keep them seperated from eachother during and right after the hibernation...
Good luck !
Henke :)

Thanks for the info... If anyone else has any other tips or opinions please let me know. Also, does it matter how big or fat a male is weight wise? I have been told to keep him on the thinner side and I have been told that it doesn't really matter. Same goes for the female as well.. My bigger female is super fat and my smaller one is fat, but not like my bigger one. Also, will one male breed 2 different females at the same time? Thanks for the replies so far and keep em coming!!!

I would definitely take the male out of the enclosure for a while and then put him back in for two or three days at a stretch.... he's probably forgotten why he's in there... also, you might try introducing the females into his enclosure rather than the other way around. Having another male, as one person suggested will probably lead to a bit of male combat and maybe some breeding, but I'd opt for pulling him out for a few days to make him want to go back in with his harem.

Well my Crotalus atrox bred last year. They arrived in February 2002. I am not sure if they had been kept together before they arrived (from Wolfgang Wuster) but I put them in together, fed them but no other special treatment. All of my snake rooms are kept at a constant temperature ( I dont cool any snakes down), the room lights are on for the same duration throughout the year (obviously less natural daylight during the winter months). Babies were born 18 June 2002. Fed well form the start.
One warning, do not underestimate the potency of their bite!!! I was nailed by one when it was just 7 weeks old and it was a real bad bite ( 20 ampoules of AV)
Regards,
Paul
