The only thing in Maryland is you cannot have timber rattlers and cannot keep them as pets. There are no permits I have been here for a year and it took me six months to get a hold of Monica Powell who is in charge of things that have to do with that and she told me as long as I could demonstrate they were not pets then they were fine. What part are you moving to? Let me know maybe we can get together and trade some stuff or just talk reptiles.

You might want to talk to someone else who is in charge of things there. From what I gathered, you need a permit for exotic species and a permit to keep timber rattlesnakes. I would think that any snake not native to Maryland would be considered exotic, not just species outside of the US. The ONLY hots you can keep without a permit are copperheads, and even they have limitations. Less than four can be kept without a permit.

Go to the DNR website and you will plainly see that you can keep any venomous snake not native to maryland without a permit as long as it is not kept as a pet. It has a section on the website called When do you need a permit and When dont you need a permit. If you call they will tell you no you cant have them because they do not want them in the state but the website for the DNR is clear it is the most mixed up state around as far as making it clear what you can have and cant have but that still doesnt keep your neihbors from bitchin about it.

Thanks for the imput guys. I am probably relocating to Carrol or Baltimore CO, maybe Westminster but we are not certain yet. I am working in the reptile house at the baltimore zoo, and would like to keep all of the animals I currently have, most of which are copperheads (All 5ssp though) and some odds and ends (rattlers, vipers, etc). I do demonstrations as well as breed, what exactly does the state of MD consider "pets"?

hey it sounds like to me you will be fine just dont keep them in your living room in tanks take a room and make sure it is locked and keep records which you most likely do anyway. I am in cecil co and have a large collection of cobras and such rattlesnakes.

No I don't live in Maryland and I also read what the DNR website had to say. Here's a question to you, if one is not keeping a snake a "pet" or keeping them to sell/trade, then why would one keep them? They wouldn't, therefore, one would need a permit to keep venomous reptiles. You can read into it the way you want, if you don't have a permit, then you won't be able to convince anybody that any reptiles you have are not being kept as pets or for sale. What reason would you use, home security? Bottom line, they have a permit system for guys like Jared, it would be much safer for him acquire them. If you don't have them, then it's going to be your fault when they catch up to you.

TJ call monica powell she is the head of the dnr for this she will tell you what I am telling you there are no permits to get. There is a scientific permit for $25 to keep non venomous native to maryland but no permit for any reptile not native to maryland aka a cobra or rattlesnake from somewhere else. You can keep the snakes for display or to study there habits in a snake house locked and secure and they cannot say they are pets like keeping them in a tank in your house. I do not charge to see my snakes but I have everyone sign a legger with name and address so I can prove I am showing them. They are my pets but you dont go telling everone they are not in Maryland anyway. But you call her and then come back and talk I am in maryland and do not make it a practice of breaking the law so I checked very carefully before bringing my snakes here.
