Hi,
Well the old forum seems a wee bit slow these days, i was wondering how many of u guys keep non venomous snakes as well as venomous, it seems that a lot of you have a good size collection and i was wondering how much approx do u spend a month on your hobby\study..
Can you feed your snakes on wild caught mice etc or do you have to buy them in specially..and do you do shows etc with them ever..i personally would love to see that but as i stay in Scotland there aint much chance i reckon..
a very interested non keeper..

Ian,
I keep several nonvenomous snakes including various western subspecies of kingsnake, a gopher snake, bull snakes and a 23 year-old Columbian Rainbow Boa.
At every opportunity I give presentations to the public such as Boy Scout groups, public schools, military groups, hospital/medical personnel, utilities engineers and herp groups. One of my favorites is participating at Earth Day celebrations because it gives me a chance to interact and educate people who didn't specifically come to see my snakes.
Great question.
I am a big advocate of keepers being involved with educating their community in any way that becomes available to them. People fear what they don't understand.

I have 7 transpecos copperheads, 2 osages, 9 orth carolina intergrade copperheads, 7 SC southern copperheads, 1 broadband copperhead,3 Kentucky northern copperheads, 2 Dorchester SC canebrakes , 1 n fl canebrake, 1 Eastern Diamondback, 1 northern pine, 3 eastern milk snakes,2 slender tailed hognosed vipers, 1 speckled eastern kingsnake, 2 NC molekingsnakes, and my babies 2 ornate cantils. I do lectures for boy and girl scouts, k-12 schools and college crowds. Then ya hafta gage how many shows you will do this year. And feedings, lemme tell ya, the larger the group the longer feeding takes, same with cage cleaning. And if ya happen to get offspring you will need to get them set up as well. I really couldnt even tell ya how much time is involved, but to keep the animals in the right conditions and have everything "work" is priceless LOL!

PS Its nice to live in a herp friendly state as well! YAY PA!

Once upon a time I tried feeding wild-caught mice to my snakes. I fed a couple of wild caught mice or rats (been a few years - memory's not as good) to a young pair of Brazilian Rainbow Boas which died very shortly after feeding. Turns out that, UNLESS YOU FREEZE THEM FIRST, feeding wild caught mice or rats, endangers your reptile with all sorts of parasites and diseases. And there is also the issue of whatver toxins the rodents might have been exposed to. Now I feed all of my snakes on frozen/thawed mice that I get fairly cheaply from friends in Florida. The mice here (in SE Georgia) run from $1 each (pinkies) to $2 for adults. That can add up to quite a chunk of cash depending on the size of your collection and how often you feed them.
Just my personal observations,

$1-$2 cheap??? Most shows are 50 cents or less a peice for adult mice. Atleast in and around PA. If not anywhere else, Rodent Pro is fairly similiar, just have to consider shipping costs.
