vipergt I did alot of road cruising this year, but I was'nt very successful 1 copper,3 black rats,1 eastern king,1 northern water, and 5 black racers.I am mostly looking for scarlets, scarlet kings/eastern milks, mole kings, eastern kings/black kings.just trying to beat 1 snake per trip.I'm new to road cruising most of my experience is the old fashioned way(stumbling through the woods)just trying to locate good possibilities in the WNC and upper half of SC. By the way what area of NC you hail from? THANKS MTN VIPER

I run a small nonprofit snake rescue in Wilkes County and my year was pretty boring too. Most of the calls ended up being Rat Snakes even though the callers assured me they were venomous species. I either release the snakes in my back yard or take them to Stone Mountain State Park where they are protected by law. This park is a great place to photograph snakes as long as you don't bother them. It also has a pretty good population of Diamondback Rattlers that are best viewed in the evenings laying in the road to soak up a little more heat before night.

Try going to the Cape Fear Serpentarium, you can ask some of the employees about road cruising that area. There is a guy there that works with the mambas and cobras, I think his name is Scott. When I went on a trip out to NC he pointed me down some good roads. I'm from CA and I can't remember the names of the highways I went on, sorry.
-good luck.

The rattlesnakes I posted about at Stone Mountain State Park are Crotalus horridus not Crotalus atrox as I stated. I've heard so many people around here refer to them as diamondbacks, I did it myself. Sorry for any cunfusion.

I would like to start a snake rescue myself. Not sure whether to charge a fee or not. Any suggestions? How many calls did you get a week? Is it worth your time?
Thanks.

I feel it is worth my time, although it can be a major pain. To be effective you will need a few experienced people to help you, you can't do it by yourself if you work. Running an add in a local paper should probably bring in all the calls you want. Be sure to state in your add the radius you will respond to and tell them to keep the snake in sight at all times if possible. DO NOT do this for free, we always charge at least our gass money and if you need to move something like a woodpile charge more. Always keep the home owner at a safe distance but close enough to respond to an emergency. We stay in contact via cell phones and radios. Try to work in pairs if possible. Make sure you have all the equipment you need and a place to safely release the snakes. Hope this helps.
