It is best. However, most people dont do it due to availability and cost. Im not one to tell you about availability, buy my guess is with its high prices, its not excessively common. Also, I'm not sure of the exact cost, however it is expensive. It also has an expiration date I believe; with a short shelf-life, thats alot to invest.
Given that it is not available to most people, the next best thing is to call local hospitals and see whichs ones have, or can get antivenom the fastest if needed, also keep note of atleast 2-3 major antivenom banks.
Its best, as a venomous keeper to have a bite protocol book. Keep species information in this book, containing english, latin, and pictures of the species. Keep the type of antivenom needed for your select species as well. ALWAYS have this book on hand, if an emergency should occur, this could be your life saver.
You would be surprised how many EMTs, doctors, etc do not know how to care correctly for snake bite victims, Im sure a few members of SHHS have some nasty stories/experience of bad hospitalization. Thus why information, and basic procedures should be listed in your bite protocol book.
