If this had happen in the USA he would be facing child endangerment charges. But being a star gives people more rights to be stupid. The Croc Hunter is to herpetology what the Harlem Globetrotters are to basketball. Harassing and teasing animals for the general public is not research. When did it become about people's egos and not the animals.
As an ex-cop I have charged people with endangerment and this case would be easy to win in court.

The stunt he pulled wasn't very well thought out. He may think his child was in no danger, he may have known that croc from the time it was a hatchling, but still, you never know when something wrong could happen. Almost anyone else that saw that would think he's an idiot, and there are some people that evidently even think his children need to be taken away. I think that's rediculous as the man obviously knows what he's doing around his animals. Whether you hate him or love him, the simple fact is this: his antics and risks he's taken on camera have done more for global recognization of the plight of herps than Corwin, Marvin, and O'Shea combined. Yes he has some unorthodox methods of handling, but its how he's able to get people excited about herps. I personally really enjoy watching his shows (could have something to do with my obsession with Aussie snakes), and will continue to do so even after this. We all make mistakes every now and again, and I can imagine that he'll never make this one again.

Chance has a good point regarding the good Irwing has done on the plight of herps in general. Was is stupid? Yes in my eyes without question but was it any riskier than other things people do with their children; not really. For instance: Biking with a baby on the frame crossbar or even in a child seat on the rear. I have done it and I have seen many others do it too. Many people STILL don't have their children strapped into a car seat or seatbelts while driving around. I've seen people have an infant on the floor in the coils of a large python. In my eye's this is even riskier knowing how suddenly the feeding response can be turned on. Are child services acting on these issues that can be seen daily on our streets & highways?..NOT
Why Irwin? Cause he is a public figure and it's always open season on them. They love the publicity to show that they are really doing something; besides losing kids in Florida and having some starve to near death in foster care in New Jersey.
All risks we take are sized up by the risk taker and deemed "worth it" or not. He thought it was worth doing for what ever reason. Before the world condems him for this stunt, it should clean up it's own act first. "May he who is free of sins cast the first stone"

I love the Croc Hunter but have to say that I was shocked to see him do that. I would have never dreamed that he would do something so risky for his child or his career. He is a true pioneer but that will turn a lot of folks away from him.

Hello fellow herpers!
I am a big fan of Steve Irwin, have been for AGES! I admire his knowledge, passion, love for wildlife and his skill as a professional animal handler.
What Steve Irwin did with 4 week old Bob was risky, irresponsible, dangerous and it set a bad example of himself as a father - BUT he knows it was a mistake and I'm sure he won't do it again!
Steve Irwin has a UNIQUE way of working with dangerous reptiles. He doesn't have to use hooks or grabsticks when handling deadly snakes and he can get close to even the largest crocodile - the reason? because HE understands THEM and THEY understand HIM. He is confident in his own ability because he has grown up surrounded by dangerous reptiles and has learnt how to deal with them from a very young age.
Racing drivers have that sixth sense of knowing precisely when to brake, turn the wheel or swerve to avoid hitting another car - its their special gift.
Steve Irwin's sixth sense is his ability to understand dangerous reptiles and just how close he can get without tradgedy, that is why he is the BEST!!
Nobody is perfect and accidents DO happen, I'm NOT playing that down.
Some people say he is crazy - those are the people that don't understand him or his way of thinking.
He is a PROFESSIONAL. He is enthusiastic because he loves reptiles.
His crocodile demonstrations are just that - demonstrations. He shows the public how honed and efficient crocs really are, their hunting behavior and strike force.
Remember - "Conservation through exciting education"
Nobody should think any less of him because of this mistake. Yes, it was stupid , but he loves his children - anyone who has seen him with them knows that.
Enough said.

Supid as hell. Yeah, people do crazy things with their kids all the time but why that shouldn't mean he should do the same.
Not only should he get the blame but so should the producers and his publicity people for even letting this happen. Was ANYONE there thinking ?
These public figures have to be ten times more careful with the things they do or say as they are watched so much closer than the rest of society. There's always someone waiting to knock them down with the slightest slip up, right or wrong.
This is another black eye for herps and herpers. That's all I've been hearing since it's happened from anti herp(er) people. And yeah, that's just what they need -more ammunition against us.
As much good as he's done with his programs , he just about erased all the respect he's gained but this stupid, stupid, redneck stunt.

I have not seen the episode in question, but I'm wondering if there were camera tricks used to make it look as though the shild were actually in close proximity to the animal, when actually it was not?
As much of a loose cannon as I believe Mr. Irwin to be, I can't imagine any father doing something like putting his child in harms way like that.... possible exception of Michael Jackson... but I did say FATHER, not sperm donor.
As I said, I have no idea if this was a real "stunt" or a camera trick, but I'm finding it hard to believe that it's not just s big publicity stunt to get ratings up....
Just a thought.

I Love the croc. hunter shows. he was the one that made me see the light when it came to herps. I think I am at about 60/40 60 ok with it. I see his mistake as an honest mistake that is why I am at 60% ok. Not like jako knowing what he was doing was very dangerous. Steve has done dangeous things all his life, danger has been a big part of his life. So it is more of an every day thing to him. But the 40% is that he has made tons of mistakes that got him hurt, some bad. That tells me that he could have lost control of the moment and lost his son to the croc. in frount of all thoughs people watching. I do think that he learned a great lesson. Don't do dumb things with kids in frount of a camera. I do not see much diffrents than putting a child in a car with out a car seat. Funny thing when I seen steve holding his child out there, it did not hit me like it does to look over and see a small child standing up in the seat of a moving car. Makes me want to stop the car and beat the h*** out of the driver. I hope everything goes ok for the croc. hunter I do not like some of the ways he shows off handling snakesfor kids to see. but hey maybe I am just jealous to.

Tom, How in the world could this get his ratings up. If he is lucky he will stay on T.V. I think he has a lot of devoted fans, and will make it through this. But, I do not see how you could think that this would bring his ratings up ??
