HI ALL, WE ARE HEADING TO CUMBERLAND ISLAND IN APRIL AND WAS WONDERING IF THE DUNGENESS RUINS ARE CLOSE TO THE FERRY DROP OFF POINT. I AM CURIOUS AS TO HOW PEOPLE MOVE ABOUT A 17 MILE LONG ISLAND WITHOUT ANY SORT OF TRANSPORTATION. THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD ONE FOR KARL BETZ. THANKS G DOSS

Part of the island is entirely closed to the public so the 17 mile area is not necessarily available to you.
Transportation is entirely by foot so wear comfortable foot gear.
The only way on the island is by boat from downtown St Marys. I have heard of people taking their own boats out their but because of its park status, those people were ticketed.
Remember that anything you take to the island you must take back off with you. There are no trash receptacles on the island and the fines for littering are very stiff.
The last that I heard, you could only photograph the wildlife on the island. Rangers used to meet the boat at both ends. Not sure if this is still the case.
Good luck,
Karl

CUMBERLAND!!! Ok, there are two main drop off points. The first is at the ice house at Dungeoness. This is where you will want to get off. The next stop is about a mile or so North. That is Sea Camp. If you're there just for the day, get off at the ice house. Ask a Ranger where Racoon Island is. Anywhere between there and Dungeoness and up into the dunes will yield some fine snakes. I spent a great deal of my childhood on that island ( my uncle was the chief Ranger for many years). I have seen some of the fattest and largest snakes of my life on Cumberland. Great place! -Matt
