The probe should go in I think it is 6-9 + on a female and 3-6 on a male. That is close, I am pretty sure. someone else may be able to tell you better. It has been a while scents I probed any snakes.
Good luck.

hey Fabe,
It goes in farther on male boas, pythons, and colubrids than females. for ball pythons it goes in 7 scales I think on males and 2 to 4 on females. I'd think it would go in farther on all male snakes. but I've never probed a ratter.

most rattlers can be visually sexed. The males tend to have longer tails(more subcaudals)than females. If you've got a known female of similar size just look at their tails. i think John Hollister may have an explanation of this on his website. www.herpo.com

the males probe about 1 - 1 1/2 inches or more that7 scales the females probe at 3-5 scales about 3/8 of an inch another thing is that 3/16 probe is way to large use some thing alot smaller and use pro probes not some thing that looks like it might go in . the probes need to be rounded at the tip and debured.
