I have 3 European Adders(Vipera berus berus) at present, one of which is a melanistic or completely black male. The other two are females. 2 of them have recently succsesfuly copulated. I flimed 3 minutes of it with my web cam. I was wondering what are the ods of 2 European Adders mating breeding in the folowing conditions:50cm X 25cm X 30cm aquarium with news paper for substrate, a plastic hiding box, with another viper in with them and a sand lizard? From what I have read Euro Adders are almost impossible to get to feed by them sleves in captivity and even more close to imposible to breed. I am asking only people experienced with this species to answer. Please do. Thanks, Alex Strugariu(Snake17).

I have several V. berus in my collection ( reason for large number is that im doing some research about V. berus ) . What comes to feeding, almoust all wild specimen takes some time to take frozen or live mice. Time perioid can be quite long too, aprox 1 to 4 month. With Cb adders there is no problems at all what comes to feeding.
Copulate is not so rare in captivity with this species, if your snakes have been in hibernation. Ill keep mine about + 3 - 5 C for a three to five months. In spring first you take males out and two or three week later females. And you have to remember that V. berus does not copulate every year (females). At least not in northern part of Europe.
With wild speciemens can be this problem that they start to feed and work fine lets say 6 months to 1 year and then die, so dont forget to give Axilur etc. to wild snakes.
