I am very interested in the production of anti-venom in the U.S. for our native species of venomous snakes. I am currently working toward a wildlife biology degree with an emphasis in herpetology. I hope to be involved in venom research once I complete my degree.
My question is how do labs acquire the venom used for anti-venom production? Do they purchase it from outside people that milk the snakes and if so, what does a gram of venom typically bring in? Do you know of labs that will purchase the venom from outside sources?
I am giving serious thought to getting into this line of work and understand the risks invovled. I would appreciate any help and advice you can provide.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Check with the Kentucky Reptile Zoo for accurate info. This is just my opinion but, mainly you risk your life many times a day for pocket change. I believe most North American species bring under $100.00 a gram freeze dried. I might be wrong about the price but I know it isn't an alluring line of work financially. If you want to make a lot of money change majors.

Hi Steve:
To really get involved in anti-venom production/research you need an advanced degree in Pharmacology or Toxicology. See this thread (from this forum) on such laboratories, it's tough to get into the accepted venom supplier list.

Al,
Thanks for the response. It doesn't sound like this is really worth the risk. I think I will just stick to my biology degree and not worry about the venom extraction. Thanks again.
