It's great to see so many 14 and 15 year old experts on the forum lately. Who would have thunk it? I'm just wondering where do you all get your training?

im 14 and i havent really got any training. I just read books and i mean i have about 50 books just on reptiles and amphibains. I know like all the scientifc names of many snakes.I also keep very mean snakes like amazon tree boas and racers. i also will get a PHD in Herpetology and work with highly venomous animals the rest of my life. I also have 15 snakes and like ten lizards and also like 8 frogs and tons of salamanders. Just lately i met a couple of guys who keep venomous snakes and are helping me breed my snakes. I will pick up even venomous snakes if i need or want to. When i mean venomous i mean snakes like crotalus adamantues and agkistrodon contortrix and any other native to Georgia. I love animals and would die for them. Im so luckly i have a mom that has the same passion. Also in my house i own about 100 animals in all from dogs to rabbits to fish.

im 15 and i wouldnt consider myself an expert yet, but i own many exotic snakes, turtles, and tortoises. lets say i know more about herps than anybody in my school including teachers. i also know many scientific names and almost everything about reptiles. i havent recieved any training either except from books, T.V, and going in the woods and catching herps. i also buy an sell many reptiles, i think its a really great hobby. and i hope to have a job that involves reptiles in the future.

Herpman:
I don't see much in your profile on this site....A matter of fact...I see nothing to speak of...
Leave the youngsters alone. They are the future. Like many herp keepers on this forum you learn by reading and the experience of others. You had to start somewhere too. They should be able to speak freely here as you do.

Perhaps it is the name of our forum section that is misleading - "Ask the experts"
I am 45, I monitor the things said in every thread here and try not to step on any toes unless I see things getting out of hand.
However, it should be noted that even at 45, I do not claim to be an expert at anything. No matter what age you may be, there are still things to learn.
This is the place to share information between newbies and experts as well as expert to expert or newbie to newbie.
I don't want to see our new herp enthusiasts run off because they don't know something. That is all the more reason for them to be here. But, by the same token, newbies should not be answering questions on how to keep mambas and taipans.
There is room here for everyone, except for the "spoilers" who just show up to make life miserable for others. Those posts I try to catch as early as possible and remove them.
Hope this helps to put things in perspective. "Expert" is a relative term. Anyone can read a book. That doesn't make them an expert. Anyone can grab a snake. That also doesn't make them an expert. As we all found out, not that long ago, even an expert can make a mistake and grab the wrong snake and lose their life. One of our goals is to prevent that.

He was being sarcastic, not serious. Experience is the only way you're going to become well versed and respected. At 14, you can't possible have the experience or study to proclaim expertise in anything, let alone venomous snakes. That was his point--I think.

I couldn't have said it more eloquently "Buzztail". I have been keeping non-venomous snakes for 30 years and venomous snakes for 21 years. (All of a sudden, I AM beginning to feel old!) I consider myself knowledgeable, but NO "expert". If you want to talk to someone who is as close to an expert as possible, talk to Dr. Brian Greig Fry. I'll betcha' that he doesn't know EVERYTHING about snakes. As we "speak",he is doing some pioneering research on snake venoms that have never been done before. Kids, don't let mean people discourage your interests. You ARE the future if snake keeping. And just ONE of you snake-budding enthusiasts can save THOUSANDS of snakes from an untimely demise from an uneducated snake "hater"! Keep reading!!!

The only thing "well said" here so far is that: 1. The name of the forum IS misleading, and 2. Newbies should not be answering questions (about mambas, taipans, or any other topic on which they aren't well versed). No one is trying to run anybody off. I'm certainly not. Consider the fact that there were two eager, enthusiastic reponses to my original post. Neither sounded offended or indicated that they no longer felt they could speak freely. I also read EVERY thread, and I recently noticed a lot of "youngsters" giving answers instead of asking questions. The term "Expert" is NOT a relative term, except apparently on this site. I'm not an expert, never claimed to be. THAT, my friends, is why you don't see me answering many questions here. Instead, I observe and learn. Changing the name of the forum wouldn't be a bad idea. Seriously. I would never discourage a young mind from pursuing something he loves, especially herpetology. That's not what this is all about. It's about asking questions instead of pretending to know all the answers.

By that same logic HerpMan, if only the true experts (with PhDs and a lifetime of experience) were the only ones allowed to answer questions on this forum, there would only ever be questions. One can never know all there is to know about a given thing, especially when it involves living creatures that even the most advanced in the biological sciences don't completely understand. I think that this forum is a great place for people to provide their experience as well as simple facts to those who might be a bit less informed. The name of the forum was probably never meant to be set in stone as far as the literal definition of the word "Expert." Maybe you'd be happier if it were called "Ask the Experienced"? If so, just think of it that way. It's quite subjective, so however you want to think about it is fine. Of course there are occasionally going to be people chiming in on a subject they really have no reason to, but that's going to happen anywhere you go. Think of it as a fact of internet life. Regardless, I still think this forum is an excellent place to come and ask a question or to help answer someone else's, as long as you can sift through the negativity that tends to abound in the (hot) herp community.
