I live northeast of houston texas and last saturday i found a texas coral snake with its head freshly chopped off. This upset me because i have been looking for a texas coral snake to take pictures of in the wild for about four years and i havent ever seen one in my life. Finally knowing for sure that they live here, my hopes to find one have risen ALOT! Do you have any tips for me to find one?! where should I look. Is there any particular material they live under?! Thanks alot!

I am about 80 miles SW of Houston. I generally find about 3-4 Coral Snakes each year. I generally find them in my yard or crossing the road. My website has a few pics in the gallery. Look at www.radioactivereptiles.com. I have only found one in the wild, it was about a month ago and it was under a small piece of tin.

Since these guys should be undergorund most of their life, running roads after some heavy rains may help your chances. This works in sc some for easterns.

I would have to agree to go out during the rainy periods. Last month (end of March) during spring break, I went to south Texas and the weather was horrible for herping. Rainy and cloudy for the most part but we found a dead on road Texas coral snake that had recently been ran over and it was right after a heavy rain the previous day. We spent about half the time birding since there wasn't a whole lot out. Can't complain too much about the trip's weather though. We saw ruthven's whipsnake, 2 speckled racers, Texas indigo, 2 black-striped snakes, and a bunch of common stuff. The last half of the week was good weather.
This past summer, on my first night herping in Arizona I found an Arizona coral about a minute or two before it started raining, again during the rainy season.
good luck on the photos,

I also live in Houston. My best bets for finding corals were ripping apart rotted tree stumps, logs, etc. Try Huntsville State Park. Look but don't take. Good luck! Try the East Texas Piney Woods also.
