I was just checking out the snake bite photos....
I think that putting them in the photo area was a great idea. But, what I think would help even more would be an area for people that have been bitten to tell there stories. (Anonymous or not) How did it feel and what happened to you when you got bit by a monocle cobra, etc. ? Things like that....
I feel it would help us to understand the bites and even help us to know what to expect. Which would help us do the right things in case of a bite. Heck, maybe I am the only one that would like to read about snake bites......Anyways, Just a thought..... Fabian

I think it would be more wise to promote safe handling techniques, rather than try to glorify people that have been bitten.
We, as a group of venomous reptile keepers/handlers already have enough of a black eye from the public.
I think that focusing on people who have been bitten would only serve to amplify this effect.
Just my 2 cents.

If that were the case than the snake bite photos would be in that same class......... I do not feel that way and from a lot of the posts about if this site should have them. It was a big YES. We can see the photos but not learn about the bites effects in real life type stories. That is like telling half the story and stopping. I would like to know things like if a monocle cobra bites you what happened first and last ? breathing trouble, weakness, pain, was it hard to walk, etc. Oh-well, Maybe I am the only one....Fabian

People learn the quickest from their own mistakes,if we could know what the individuals where doing at the time and if they could of done something different to have prevented the bite, then we could learn also. Not every body can have or has had a mentor in this hobby, but if newbies like myself can read accounts of genuine mistakes then we/I can learn from them.Just my 2 pence.

This seems so redundant to me...
I understand that you wish to know what the effects of a snakebite feel like. However, these effects very between individuals and there would be nothing concrete anyway. Effects are determined by several factors, such as age and health of person envenomated, species of reptile, amount of venom introduced, and location of bite.
As far as wanting to know what not to do...
I don't understand anyone wanting to learn in that manner. Why not learn the right techniques? If you were studying how to repair your vehicle's engine, would you ask the instructor to tell you all the things not to do? It would only make sense for the instructor to teach you proper repair techniques.
If you know and practice proper techniques, you then already know what "not to do". For instance, if someone who was evenomated by a Monocled Cobra tells you that he/she was consuming alcohol prior to the envemomation, you can conclude that drinking was a mistake. If someone else were to tell you to never handle a venomous reptile while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you would arrive at the same conclusion.
Now if you view the two scenarios as if from the eye of the public, which one will look more responsible?
It only takes one negative action to negate several positive actions. It is my opinion that bite stories would be viewed negatively, make us look more irresponsible, and only serve to draw bad press and possibly more legislation pertaining to the keeping of venomous reptiles.

I do not agree. I see learning about the bites only enhances ones ability to understand the snakes. Have you seen the new show about Loma Lynne hospital and Dr. Sean Bush ? It is a show that explains all about snakes bites and there effects on the human body. I do not see that as bad press. I see it as education. The same way I would see the stories. Bad press would be stories about what you did wrong to get bite.....Fabian

Don't believe everything you see on tv or on the internet Mr. Fabian. Dr. Sean Bush.....I would do everything possible to not allow him to treat my snakebite! His method of treatment is terrible.....!!!!! Fasciotomies?!!!! Oh my. Get me out of his hospital.....just another tv wannabe famous bad representative!

I have read and watched a lot about him. It seemed he was on top of things. I know they call him in on a lot of bites all over. If he was not that good why are they calling on him ? The bites I have seen him treat seemed right up town. Can you tell me why you feel that way about him ? Did he treat you for a bite and mess up ???.....Fabian

Wether your learning how to keep "Hots" or becoming a Paramedic you will be taught the techniques that are required but also the mistakes that have happened and how to avoid them, its basic teaching. Its not all just simple "dont drink alcohol" or "show off"some individuals make genuine mistakes, even proffesionals. If you where to get caught out, would'nt you later inform your friends who may have the same interests/profession where you went wrong so they wouldnt end up in the same situation as you?Not communicating with each other is when your going to get rouges/individuals who go it alone and make mistakes and may cause "bad press".The problem in this world is the lack of communication amongst people.

John
