Hi All:
Maybe one of the society officers can answer this:
Is there a show or particular annual event that many of the society members get together? If so, when? If not is one planned? I realize that we are spread all over the place but It would be fun & educational.
On second thoughts it could be wild with some of the verbal clashes that have taken place on this forum.
Thanks,
Al Coritz

Here is the current situation w/ the SHHS: I am personally very tied up with many other obligations. I had to resign my duties as the Newsletter Editor and this has created a wave of problems, since no one else has volunteered to take over that function of the organization. Memberships are in limbo. If anyone has sent in an application and $$, you may notice that your check hasn't been deposited and there haven't been any mailings. I don't know when that will change.
Basically the only thing operating right now is the website. Will this situation last forever? I don't think so. We just need to re-group and re-organize. The duties of the SHHS weren't spread around enough to enable the organization to continue to function without me. That needs to be remedied. This organization was set up with the venomous community as a whole in mind. Hopefully, the community will cough up some qualified participants soon.
We may have a qualified person to take over, but I just haven't had the time to set up a meeting with him to show him how to edit the newsletter. [I also went 3 months without a PC by the way.]
Normally, SHHS members set up their own excursions and report their results back to the group. Our only consistent yearly get-together takes place at the Columbia, SC show in Sept or Oct [they've had it both months]. That will most likely continue.
The thing that really needs to change though, is everyone relying on me and Karl Betz for the organization to function. Yes, there needs to be one head, but the community as a whole needs to participate considerably more. [Believe me, you have no idea how hard it has been for us to get people to write articles for the newsletter and the site.] Try to keep in mind that this is just a hobby for me and the other officers. No one gets a paycheck from it. Personally, the newsletter was taking up about 4 solid months of my life per year.
And now, due to other obligations, I just can't do that anymore. I will always participate however.
If the newsletter never manifests, we will probably change the membership package. All new articles will go directly on the website. The membership package will consist of a patch, a bumper decal, a membership ID, and possibly a t-shirt. The price will probably remain the same - $25.
Does anyone have any input?

Hi Chris:
Thanks for your reply. I understand how the workload involving a club or society usually lands on the heads of a few key people. I was the president and board member of another society when I was living in Tucson, AZ. It's alway: 20% do 80% of the work. I would be willing help where you and other club officers deem fit. I would even be willing to undertake or help out with the newsletter as things evolve. Just let me know.
I will keep my eyes open for the fall show and make a point to come down.
Best,
Al Coritz

I think we all need to pitch in and help the best we can, and those that are able should.i love this site and it has taught me alot as a keeper in both hots and just basic husbandry. thank you to all that have been helping to keep this site and society alive. when i was just starting to keep hots this site kept me from making all those basic mistakes(not that i havent made any)and it is a tool that is needed to all. if it wasnt for this site i wouldnt have even known that ther were others that were like me and had a true passion for venomous reptiles, and other herps. i would like to see use come together more and stand as a whole cause lets face it every day there are groups thinking of ways to stop us from doing what we love. I think we all need to try our best to strive to educate as many people as we can and this site and society is one of the best ways to do that.
If i can help in any way please let me know.
Thank You,
Shane
