NOT RESPECTING STRIKE RANGE!! It is very hard to get bit if you are out of strike range.

no real number one reason, I suppose.
Leading causes: lack of expirience, improper handling, not knowing what you are dealing with, playing around, not paying attention, and strike range.

I believe that there are two that are equal in value:
distraction (of any kind) and lack of respect.
Distraction is pretty self-explanatory. It could be the dog jumps into the room because you didn't close the door all the way or it could be the phone rang and startled you, whatever.
By lack of respect I mean - placing yourself within or at the edge of the snake's strike range, thinking you're faster than the snake, that sort of thing.
Just my opinion,

Complacency and stupidity!
Complacency leads to stupidity, stupidity lead to complacency and one alone or both combined lead to "fortunate" demise!
As far as distraction, I would agree that that happens alot. However, I'll tell you like the person who taught me told it....."There is only ONE thing that will distract me when working venomous or crocs...." it's the same thing that would distract any MAN.... (meaning a woman with less than a publically acceptable amount of clothes on!)
True story!
