Hi,
I was wondering if any of you had seen a film by a South African photographer, who went in search of 7 rather hot snakes..Culminating with the big boy Black Mamba..He got bit at one point by a Cobra (cant remember what kind), but luckily it was only a glancing blow and it was in a vein on his finger so the rush of blood helped to flush out a lot of the enom that was evenomated..
cheers

I believe that was Austin Stevens and the cobra was a shield nose cobra. I think he also got tagged by a cerastes in another segment of that show. I've seen it 2 or 3 times but it's still pretty good. He's got another special where he's searching for king cobras.

I saw it. It was actually a pretty good show. I especially liked the part with the Gaboon. I thought that his handling of the snakes was a bit suspect but I haven't landed my own show yet so.......

THAT'S RIGHT, AND HE GOT HIT IN AN ARTERY, WHICH PUSHES BLOOD OUT. I THOUGHT HE WAS TOO WILD AND DANGEROUS.

Yeah, it was Austin Stevens all right. The guy shouldn't be playing with garter snakes, much less mambas, cobras, and gaboons. He was bitten by a sand viper at the beginning of the show but was not envenomated. He was bitten by an Egyptian cobra a little later that did manage to envenomate him and it could have easily been life threatening. I enjoyed the part where he erroneously stated that the boomslang is the most toxic snake drop for drop (wrong), and then tried to get it mad enough to bite at him. That just goes to show how placid boomslangs can be. Too bad that gaboon didn't whirl around and plant one right on his forehead...

Most of the show was a set up. He was "hunting gaboons" in East Africa and caught a West African Gabby...go figure... He is very reckless and not surprised he got tagged not once but twice.
I saw the other shows nice animals but an idiot for a host.

I agree with Phobos. I saw the show several times too. What`s that guy doing with a cobra or a mamba? Here are the facts about the show: at the beggining of the show he was bitten by a peringuey`s adder(Bitis peringueyi not Cerastes cerastes)and later by a Snouted Cobra(Naja annulifera). I realy laught at the idiot when he got bit. He was very cocky at the beggining too.

I saw the show and was unimpressed at the lack of self protection he exhibited. No shoes, only snadles. That was his seond mistake. His first was doing a show like that.
Everyone on these shows talks of conservation, yet, do not explain how it is done. Then they explain the perils of snake handling and then do it in the most reckless fashion possible.
When he jumped in the water for the 'boon, he never looked to see if any other dangers were lurking.
Morons, all of them.

I would also like to add to this,,,,,What kind of idiot would also live in a cube with god knows how many venomous snakes like he. I cant remember the exact number of days or snakes but it was totally stupid. On top of that he got tagged by a cobra and refused to leave and took treatment in the cube. My personal opinion----Not a good thing for kids to be watching. They see him with no regards for his life, freehandling venomous snakes, getting tagged and trying to pass it off like it was nothing. WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE IS HE SENDING! Not trying to change the subject I have mixed feelings about S.Irwin(Croc Hunter) "Oh here is a cobra let let me find a stick so I can pick him up)For god sakes if we are going to have a show geard towards kids PLEASE SET A FREAKIN EXAMPLE AND USE THE PROPER TOOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not that I totally hate him because once in a great while he will have something good and informative. The one host I do like is Jeff Corwin(I will pause for remarks) I think he shows the best handling, very informative, but yet a funny guy. I just wish he would do more shows on snakes.

Its true, Austin Stevens has down right lost his mind. In one of the episodes, He touches a ten foot+ king cobra on top of the head. Show of hands for how many of you would do that. The way he handles hot snakes makes me cringe. Some kid will see that and think its ok to go and pet a EDB. Same goes for the Croc Hunter. Check out his visit to the army base in Florida's Pan Handle. He totally free hands a pigmy rattlesnake. After that, he finds a yellow rat snake. Last time I checked they don't exactly make it over there. I will agree that Jeff Corwin and Mark Oshea are my absolute favorites. They are always preaching conservation and respect for mother nature. Hats off to both of them on a job well done.
