Hey group,
The resent post about the suphans loss in Tex. made me think. How safe are you keeping your hot snakes ? Are they in a room of there own ? Is the room escape proof ? Can your kids just walk in the snake room ?
From a lot of photos I see posted are of hots in rubbermade box's or glass tanks with a top sitting on them. Fine, but were are they kept ? Do your cages sit in your bedroom ? or your living room ?
I have a feeling that this suphan deal could have been prevented if they would have one, been kept in escape proof cage. and two, been kept a room they could not have gotten out of.....(Escape proof) "Most houses are not excape proof for a snake"
If you are going to be a good hot keeper to me this is your first priority. Letting a venomous snake get out of your house and kill someone else is "Murder" and should be treated that way. The safety of the public is in your hands when you keep deadly snakes.. "YOURS"
And I am sure if your venomous snake gets out and kills someone you will go to prison.
$hit I am really mad over this low-life...
"Please make sure your hots are in a excape proof room"
Mine are and always have been and aways will be........Fabian

I learned a lot more about this when I joined the SHHS.
My cages have always been safe and have improved over the years.
Things I hadn't thought of were pointed out to me by people who kept things much more exotic than what is legal for me.
Now my central heating/air vents are screened.
My room and cages are locked.
The window to the outside is double-paned glass.
My cage racks are sturdy 2 X 4 construction.
The door is clearly labeled as entry to venomous territory and entry is prohibited.
Handling tools are readily available from any point in the room.
There is a cleared "changing table" for tubing or cage transfering snakes.
Gosh, I can't wait to get back there and get some venomous snakes back into my "hot room".
There is always more to learn.
Keep an open and questioning mind.
"Is that safer than what I have now?"
"Does it make sense?"
Just an opinion,
Karl

Though my room can't top Karl's by any means, lol, it's still pretty safe. There are two entrances into it, both of which have strips along the bottoms of the doors to prevent snakes to squeezing under. Mice haven't even been able to get out of this so far. There are no other modes of escape from the room, as we don't have central heat and air. I don't lock the doors to the room because it's only ever myself and my roommate that occupy this house, so I don't worry about uninvited people making their way in there.
I definitely agree with you Fabian, that hots should be kept in their own room or even building. Keeping them in your room is just a horrible idea. If you don't think your snakes can get out, you haven't had them long enough. If you've had them a long time and never had an escape, then you are the exception, not the rule. And by all means, share your caging ideas with the rest of us :) I can only imagine what it would be like to wake up one morning, feel something on your chest, and pull back the covers to see your "pet" cobra snuggling to your body heat.

Although we may never know, I really doubt that the rogue cobras in Dallas escaped. Sounds more like someone didn't want them anymore and released them, not caring what the ripple effect would be. Drug dealers are notorious for keeping exotic pets and are the most irresponsible of all people to keep anything even remotely dangerous. It's possible that a drug dealer had to move on or run, whatever, had a couple of cobras and decided to let them cause a little havoc for his personal entertainment, and maybe grab the news spotlight? Who knows?

I think we can always do better and that should be in the front of our minds as hot keepers. When we walk into our snake room we should stop and think just for a moment, how can we make it safer and better for Ourselves, others, and of coarse our reptiles.
I have had one baby cottonmouth get out of it cage a few years ago. One time. And the room I had my hots in was escape proof. all vents were wire mashed and the door had a heavy skirt on it so nothing could get under them and no other way's for them to get out. It also stayed locked. You have to remember that mice can make new holes in rooms sometimes so you need to always keep checking for new ways for snakes to get out. anyways, after a little looking the baby cotton was found and put back in a better cage. Elapidking81 can tell you I have never lost a venomous snake. (AND NEVER WILL)
The room I have my snakes in now is to small that is why I am building a new bigger hot room.
As for letting cobras go just to cause term-oil Holly-cow.
There is no deference between that and Richard Reasy How ever you spell his last name!!! (The shoe bomber)
Those cobras could kill more people than he could of.
Anyways..........Fabian

Hey Trex,
Your hasty generalization about exotic pets and drug dealers must be stemming from the tiger belonging to the drug dealer in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. Yea I know, I heard the story too. I wouldn't associate exotic hobbyists with being drug dealers, nor would I say that this hobby draws this sort of interest/crowd either. Get real, man.
What is the case is that you have someone, who didn't have any respect for the law. We know that anyway. Dallas ordinaces prohibit keeping venomous reptiles within its borders. We also know that this person also kept this animal in a public housing developement. Another bad idea. It is probably safe to speculate that this individual probably did not take the time/money to house the specimen in a secure container/room to prevent escape. This individual, as well as the drug dealers are not representative of the responsible hobbyists keeping venomous reptiles.
Good Day!

Your hasty reading of my post no doubt led you to the miscomprehension you based your post on. Please read it again and see if you draw the same conclusion... Tiger? What tiger? My point was, and remains, that many drug dealers use exotic pets to scare people, protect stash and so on; I never said nor implied that all exotic pet owners were drug dealers. You need to be more careful in your readings before leaping off in reckless directions. I trust you're more careful with your hots than you are in your comprehension.

Some years back I meet a guy at a forth of July party that had a monocle cobra. Him and his wife lived in a camper on the back of a pick-up truck.
He was a tattoo artist and I later found out the reason he had the cobra. It was because he was a drug dealer and the cobra was his watch dog.
That was the very first cobra I had seen in real life.
He told me how he used it to stop the law from coming into his camper. "Man what a low life".
It is a well known fact that drug dealers use venomous snakes to slow law enforcement from coming into there houses.

Taipan_ nuts,
You are very right about this guy not having any respect for the law or anyone else and about him, her," IT " keeping an animal like that in a public housing area.
I really do think they got out and was not turned loss.
I pray that is the deal....
Some people will do anything so I guess they could have been turned loss.." MAN "
Have a good day,
Fabian

I totally agree with the fact that all hot keepers should be held responsible for their snakes. If you can't protect the public from your snake, how in the hell are you going to protect yourself from the snake? It is the same thing as buying a gun and putting it in the middle of the street. It's wrong. If they find out who this idiot is, I hope they put him in a 4x4 room and leave him in there for 24 hours with this snake.
Please be careful with your hots, and remember that they can potentially kill someone.
Will
