Hey all, just had an idea for a service that would provide anyone who wanted it, sitting services for their reptiles. While out of town etc... I know some reptiles are ok to leave for a week at a time, but for any longer time perid and also certain species need more care than once a week. I am just sending out a feeler to see what everyone on here thinks of the idea and if you think us in the herp community could/would use a service like this.

I would have to say no. Personally speaking I have no way to verify the credentials of someone unless I know them. I think the idea is pretty good, but you will be hard pressed to find someone who will leave their stock in the hands of someone who is an unknown commodity, especially if the herps are hot.

Snakesafe: I understand what you are saying and agree totally with that, as I would not trust my collection to someone I do not know. But I am well known and respected in the herp community around where I live and I am very involved in a lot of stuff with different organizations etc.. So that said...if you knew the person (maybe not even know them) just heard of them and you know they know what they are doing and a lot of people recommend the person..would you then use the sitting service, if you were in need of such services? Thanks for your input and opinion!

My daughter used to "herp-sit" a couple of hundred geckos for some people she used to babysit for (as in watch and feed the critters when mom & dad took the kids and left town for some time).
Personally, no, I would not use or recommend anyone of whom I had no personal knowledge to watch my reptiles, especially venomous.

Tough question to answer, but I would still lean toward saying no. Right now there are 3 people that I would trust anything that I had to and the ONLY reason is I have seen there setup and know how they handle their stock. Word of mouth is great, but first hand, eyes-on knowledge, is the only real proof.
I agree with your idea, but I think it would be a tough sell. Most herpers are very particular about thier animals and are not known to be the most trusting of souls. I hope you can make this work, though....

Nice concept but too risky to impliment. The lawyers would have quite a party with this one... Imagine if the "snake sitter" was chomped by something nasty or accidentally something escaped...oh boy! I don't even feel comfortable letting my girl friend humidify or water my venomous herps while I'm away on business and I have given her hours of training.
Best,
Al
