I had begun to establish a venomous herp society( and an antivenom bank was in the plans) here in Pa about a year and a half ago. Due to the constant bickering and lack of respect for the fellow herper I see in the forums, as well as the low ethics and standards that now plague the venomous community, I had all but given up on the plan. A website/domain was purchased and in the initial setup stages ( its still online, although not released to everyone in the forums, we were waiting to get the site into top shape before letting everyone in on it).
I rarely post a comment in the forums, due to the negativity that many individuals seem to thrive on. But I’m also not quite ready to throw in the towel and give up on the idea that we can pull it together, and avoid the eventual all out ban that may be in our future. I have been maintaining a sizable collection for nearly 18 years without escape, bites, or incidents, and I’m not bragging just sharing alittle backround, my wife is known as Sierra to many of you. My vision for the society is nearly identical to the SHHS’s, education, conservation, information sharing, and trying to make some difference in the legislation ( keeping it fair and within reason) but also as yet another gathering place for us get together on some type of regular basis and one of the most important goals for this group should be to setup a northeastern antivenom bank, .
What I need to know is how strong is the interest in the northeast for our society? Please post here if your interested and your rough location,( we are near Pittsburgh) so I can get some type of head count and make my final decision to either scrap the idea or to move it forward. Any additional comments will also be taken into account. Thank you in advance for your time.

I am living in th S.E but would be interested in suporting a new Hot Herp group..First because i have sent money and letters to shhs now over 6 months ago and have heard not a word..no confirmation..no newsletter..or whateverelse membership entitiles you to..So I have to think that it must not be run too well..Im sorry if this offends any one..but its my experience..So i write off the small amount I sent..and move on..but the stated goals of SHHs and what you suiggest for your new group are in line with my own and I AM worried about increased federal and even local legislation that will severely limit our pastime and curtail the collection of many species....its a crying shame that you can run over..chop with a hoe..shoot..squash or otherwise anihilate any snake..and the state basically turns a blind eye but try collecting a specimen or two and the fish and game come down on you like they OWN these animals..makes ME SICK!!!..whats wrong with this picture?
And I agree on this site ther is way too much self righteous...wind-blowing..would be nice to share info without the condesending attitude...
wish you well in the start of the new group especially if you can keep members well informed on any and all new legal threats to our hobby..it would be worth while and count me in! e-mail me at staghounds@hotmail.com if you get it going..i may be of some help.

Well, First let me say that my family and I are members of the SHHS and think its a great society, I do know that its been undergoing some changes recently and those who run it( only a small handful of dedicated guys) due thier very best. You should understand just how difficult it is to get members to participate in the active side of the newsletter and other functions. Its always the same few individuals doing all the thngs needed to keep the organization going, these guys also have other lives, jobs and families which take up much of thier time. If everyone, EVERYONE, cant pitch in, then of course a society will be strained to exsist. It takes much begging and pleading to get articles written for the newsletter. Chris, Karl, Thomas and all involved are in it for the right reasons. Please bear with them. We won't be a " rival" to the SHHS but just another club trying to make a difference, infact I look forward to working with these guys in anyway possible.
I'm sure whatever happend with your application will get resolved, and that it was inadvertant.
I do hope that if your interested in our group, if it comes into being, that you will take up a few duties such as writting an article. We need serious people that want to be active. Will you be?
Thanks
Shawn

Shawn,
This guy's interested, since the entire country considers the DC Metro area to be in the NE, but it's not like there's some Mid-Atlantic Herp Society or anything, sure we have a Maryland Society, but no one's interested in exploring and sharing new ideas or info on Hots. I'm raising my hand now if you plan to go ahead. I'd like to join the SHHS, however due to no one wanting to help out the big guys like Chris and Karl, membership is at a stand still. Let me know.
Thanks,
Matt
