I'm a little bit curious about the last post. I've never heard of any such sightings, much less catches of canebrakes in VA. Perhaps someone can confirm this to give me better insight, but being born, raised and weened into hots in VA, I've not heard of any. Tims, cottonmouths and copperheads, most definitely, but haven't heard of canebrakes. Jeff Quarles lives in Roanoke, VA, maybe he can give us some more info?
Just an observation, not criticism.

Alas,
I do stand corrected, according to some fellow herpers in the Virginia Herp Society. Thanks.
