I found a website that sells snake traps. The traps are said to effectively capture snakes live without harming the snake. Has anyone ever used a snake trap. If so, how effective are they?

I personally like drift fences with pitfall traps, they work quite well. Funnel traps work better for some species than pitfalls provided they are in the drift fence array, however, both work well. Other traps can be used to catch nuisance snakes, however, I suggest visual capture with tongs and bagger for these as it works much faster.

The live traps I have seen for sale are made with a very sticky pad inside the trap. Like a fly paper. You can not get the snake off it with out hurting the snake. There may be a different one out there to. But that is the only live snake trap I have seen. Is that the kind you are talking about ??

I've also seen the traps with the glue and would never consider using them. The particular trap I'm thinking of is a mesh wire trap with a funnel system on each end. They say a snake cannot at all escape once captured which I'm sure is just their extravagant marketing ploy. But, I do think it would be difficult for the snake to get out or at the very least take a lot of time for it to figure out how to escape. You can see the trap at http://www.bugspray.com/catalog/traps.html
I thought this may be something interesting and fun to do in addition to field herping by hand. I just wonder if it would actually work.

Correction on the use of "sticky traps".
I have used them to catch rodents, shrews, lizards and small snakes. The live animal can easily be removed from the sticky surface. How? Apply vegetable oil, it releases the animal from the sticky surface without harm, Of course, you then have to wash off the vegetable oil!
If you don't believe me, stick your finger on a trap, your choice as to which finger ;) , then apply vegetable oil as a release agent.

Ok, That trap would work well then. I have used the ones for mice. But not for reptiles....
Cool"
