I'm going to make my first trip down to Apalachicola Florida this week. Can someone tell me where some good herping spots are in that area? My main goal is to find/see pigmy rattlesnakes.
Thanks

Be sure that you have a map, a compass and maybe even a GPS to go herping in the Apalachicola. Cell phones won't work. So you also want to make sure that you have plenty of fuel, water, food, and a good first aid kit.
The Apalachicola Nat'l Forest is almost half a million acres. For the most part, you can't really pick a bad place to herp. Just head for somewhere in the middle of the forest and keep riding. Keep your speed down and stay on the road. Pigmy's are so difficult to see in heavy brush that you will be more productive sticking to the roads than walking in the bush. I am uploading the Spring 2003 newsletter which has an article about the Apalach that I wrote. It should give you a general idea of what to expect. Go to the file library and look under "Sample Newsletters". [Note: We currently don't have an editor for the newsletter, so we haven't produced a Winter or Spring 2004 Issue.]
Good luck,
Chris Harper
