LD50 means the "lethal dose" to half the tested lab rat/mice specimans! take into consideration the amount of venom injected for each species of snake compared to the lethal dose! in most cases (dealing with the more toxic of course) the LD50 will be much less that the amount injected! it will give you a "general" idea of how a particular snakes ranks on the charts as the most venomous! my suggestion if you plan on keeping hots and your useing this as an idea of what species to keep is, get some experience with a pro first and get other people in-put as well. venom affects people and prey diffrently. the LD50 tables are pretty much just a overview to give you the idea! i hope this has helped. atheris2004@yahoo.com

Hi:
Atheris2004 is correct. It is just useful is comparing toxcity of venoms of different snakes under laboratory conditions. It in NO WAY relates to what would happen in humans under field conditions, there are so many variables like: Health & age of snake, location & diet of snake, size of snake, curcumstances under which you were bitten (is the snake really angry or hurt), where you were bitten, and your health.
These are just a few. All you really need to know is that whatever you keep; you need to respect it; and it's ability to kill you or at least make you very ill. I would have a good look at as many snakebite photos and accounts as you can to make sure this sinks in.
Good Luck,
Al
