I'm almost positive you know what melamine is. Your cheaper kitchen counters are probably covered with it as are cheaper bathroom counters. Mobile homes use this product a lot as it is cheap, lightweight, and has very good water repellancy propreties. Melamine is very thin (1/16") and is used as a layer over plywood. Any good hardware store should have this product. Happy building!
