I have thought for awhile about asking this on this site but i will ask is there any more danger for a person taking antianxiety medication like xanax(Alprazolam) it is a Benzodiazepine like valium. If a person were to get bit by a snake that had a neurotoxic venom like a cobra or some of the vipers like the ones we have here in the states what would the effect be i know that xanax effects the nervous system and so does neurotoxins, I have heard that it could help by keeping the person bitten more calm in a bad situation, slow the heart rate slowing the spead of venom. now i'm not suggesting taking xanax if i were bitten so dont get me wrong nor if a person is under the influence of the drug should not be handling hot snakes but what if a person does get bit while on the drug what would the effects be , also not to talk just about xanax what about other drugs even over the counter drugs
thanks

Hi Shane,
I think there would be some drugs that would help and some that would hurt. Like if you were to take a lot of aspirin before getting bite your blood would be much thinner and run faster. That would be bad. Anything that would speed up the blood flow. I do not think that xanax or those type of drugs would have much of an effect on a snake bite good or bad.

Shane,
I asked my Doctor about it today and he said it really would not have any effect on the bite good or bad. Even on elapid bites.
