"you will get bitten eventually", why does it have to be that way?
i must say that a majority of the people here say this, and i dont think this is true. as of now i keep 2 copperheads, and whenever i deal with them i always use a tool and i think if i keep up my methods i will never be bitten. what do you guys think?

well I think there is always the possibility that I will be bitten, but I will do everything in my power to prevent it. like NEVER reaching into the care, ALWAYS using tools and NOT handling unless necessary.
just my $ 0.02

Well I can not say for sure but, I think if you were to ask every venomous snake keeper in the world that has kept venomous snakes for years you would find that most have been bitten by there snakes at least once and most of them more than once.
Sometimes there are things that need done to your hot snakes that tools do not work that well on. like Doctoring a mouth of a snake or removing an eye cap etc. Tubes and hemostats help yes but, you still have to be in that danger zone. Things go wrong sometimes. Things that you and I never think will happen to us. But they do happen and a lot more than you might think. Out of all the venomous keepers I know that have kept hots for years Most of them have been bitten at least once and most of them more than once. They all use tools. If you are going to care for your reptiles in every way you will have to be in the danger zone many times in your life. Out Of all those times anything can and does go wrong.
Maybe you will be one of them that never has anything happen. But maybe while trying to care for one of your reptiles something will go very wrong and you will be just another venomous keeper that has been bitten.
Keeping venomous snakes is nothing less then dangerous. No matter how careful you are things go wrong that's life. You can say you will never be bitten but, You are doing something that is very very dangerous and anything dangerous has it's bad day's.
Just my thoughts on it.

you will have a car accident eventually? the possibility is there.... has every driver that has been driving for a few years had an accident? No.
Learn from good teachers, respect yourself, respect your animals and use a little common sense...there is no reason for the average reptile keeper to be bitten.
Accidents don't happen. Mistakes do!
Every venomous bite in a captive situation is a mistake...nothing more, nothing less!
This just happens to be an art of perfection.....
Basically, no! You don't "eventually get bitten"!
Stay safe and have fun!

Most people that have drove a car for year have had an accident and most more then one.
If you turn in front of someone on a road and get hit it means you made a mistake. You would not say you made an accident by turning in front of the car.
An accident is something that has happened you did not want to happen, A mistake is something you did wrong not meaning to.
Weather you call it an accident or a mistake it is still a bite.
Saying you will never get bite by one of your venomous snakes would be like saying you can completely control everything that happens to you all the time.
" Boy wouldn't that be great"
Heck You could do anything you ever wanted and never have to worry about being hurt. You could even be a pro bull rider and never have to worry of being hurt if you use your head and common sense nothing could happen to you. The truth is no matter how careful you are or how much you plan things out things go wrong.
Stopgetinpopped, Have you never had anything ever happen to you you did not plan to happen ? Like say you were driving a nail and missed the nail and hit your finger ? If so I am sure you were using all the common sense you have to not hit your finger because it hurts bad. But, It still happened.
Anyways, I wish all of you that think if you just use common sense you will never be bitten all the best..........Fabian

No Fabian,
I don't ever recalling hitting my finger with a hammer. I was taught by a construction pro that you are supposed to hit the shiny thing, not your finger...So with a little common cents, I pay attention to what I am doing. Hitting your finger is not an accident " something that occurs that you had not control in" A mistake is something that you did wrong. If you believe that all of your bites were accidental, than you should find a new teacher and not think that you are as experienced as you say you are....
There is no excuse for being bitten....
Good luck to you.

I have been building houses off and on all my life and can say I am not as good as you I have hit my finger lots of times.
Maybe you could come to Mississippi and teach me how to hit just the nail 100 % of the time. My finger would thank you :-} How much an hour ?
But really, I just do not feel by any means people have complete control over mistakes or accidents that they can be 100 % sure they will not happen.
You are saying that you are 100 % sure you will never be bitten.
I am saying your chances are high of a bite if you keep venomous snakes for many years.
Even if we were both wrong and it fell in between somewhere your chances are still good you will have something happen some day.
My friend nothing is 100 % sure in the world.
Let me ask you this ?
Out of all the long term hot keepers in the world what % of them do you think has been bitten at least once in there life's ?

i have never been bit , and i will stand strong in saying if i keep up by using the proper equipment and keeping my head on straight than there is no reason that i should ever get bitten. and if i ever got bit it would kill me (if it didnt kill me any way)cause i have a lot of pride in the fact that i have never been bitten not to say im not prepared for the worst and i know it can happed but it would bother me bad ,cause in keeping venomous snakes bites just dont happed by chance if i got bit than i did something wrong mistakes are avoidable and if i do get bit i know that there also correctable.
