Hi,
Ok not a very technical\scientific question, but ive heard say that Rattlers are very fast, Gaboons very fast and Mambas very fast, does anyone know which is the fastest striker..also what snakes if any will actively rush you if in defence mode etc...

Hi:
Puff Adders (B. arietans) is said to have the fastest strike measured at 28 ft/sec. My Puff & C. cerastes are blindingly fast from my experience. Rattlesnakes were measured somewhat slower. This is just a reference point because I think it will depend on the individual. Cobras were measured at about 8 ft/sec. This is why Mongoose & some humans can dodge some strikes. No matter what the speed; if you misjudge them you're gonna be hurting. Extream care is always required.
As for your second question. There are several I can think of: King Cobras, Mambas, Taipans, Brown Snakes and other Australian snakes have this reputation.

I agree with Phobos. Also, the Acantophis(Death Adder) has a realy fast strike. In general, vipers have realy fast strikes but are slow in movement. That is the oposed of what caracterises most elapids. Elapids are very fast moving but slow strikers. My NoseHorned Vipers can strike quicker than in the blink of an eye. I don`t think you could dodge a viper`s strike if you where in it`s range but you could dodge a cobra`s. Hope this is of some help. Regards, Alex.

I think this question came up several years ago and the concensus was the gaboon had the fastest strike, with the puff coming in second...
but I'm not sure...
who measures this stuff anyway??!! What a kewl job.

Hi there.
I have always been led to believe that the fastest striker in the world, is the Saw Scaled/Carpet Viper (Echis carinata).
In terms of defensive "charging", all the big boys are quick. However I would say that Dendroaspis polylepis is the swiftest.

Hi Richie:
I have Echis carinata in my collection along with the common snakes from Bitis. The Sawscales have a very fast strike too but telegraph their intentions with a slow stalk of the intended prey. My gabbies just have this massive explosion which feels like the forceps were hit by Mike Tyson. The Echis strike is hardly felt. It is very lite tap.. but with a lethal results.
My Echis pair may not be typical in the sense they seem to be calm and seldom display a defensive posture. The male is quicker to get defensive but is also more "adventurious". They seem more curious about me and come right up to me and check out what I'm doing. This is interesting but not at all comforting to me while working in their cage. This does not seem like a feeding response but just them being curious.
As you know it's very difficult to gauge the real velocity of strikes. I think the relative size difference in the snakes contributes to the difficulty in clearly defining the velocity attained. One thing is clear; don't be at the end of the trajectory.
Just sharing my observations.
Cheers!
Al

From experience, a large WC puffy definitely has the fastest strike. Haven't kept a gaboon yet, though...
As for charging, gotta go with dend. poly. followed by a pissed O. hanna

Most of the advanced keepers (20 years or more) that I have talked with agree that the Gaboon has the fastest strike.
