I'm curious, after doing a lot of research on CroFab and speaking with someone at Fougera, it seems that you can't purchase CroFab for a "private" stock up. Does anyone have any insight into this area? I could potentially ask my internist to get me a script for it, thus allowing me to "stock up". I wonder if anyone else has the same notion and if so, how did they go about procurring it? I think that this particular topic is one that any hot herper should consider. Sure, if you are always cognicent of what you're doing, you won't need it. What happens that one time you're out in the bush and in the middle of BFE, where the nearest hospital is a one room renovated house? Any help or suggestions are more than welcome.

Right. Only hospitals can stock it in the US, because it has to be administered by a physician in an Emergency Room. The reason that you are allowed to keep antivenom for exotic snakes is so that when you are bitten, the antivenom will ride to the hospital of your choice with you - so that a doctor can administer it in an ER setting. Giving yourself antivenom at home is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, potentially fatal, and is not recommended.
There's no reason to stock CroFab at home [in the US anyway]. It's $1800 per 2 vials and you would need at least 10 vials in stock. It currently has an exp. date of 2 years. Nearly all areas of the US have hospitals that stock it or even some of the old Wyeth ACP, so let them bear the financial burden. That's what we pay them zillions of dollars to do anyway isn't it?

I can't help with the procurement problem, but I would point out the following... 1) Antivenom has to be stored refrigerated, and so you're not likely to be taking it with you to BFE. 2) It has to be administered in a hospital where you trust them to not only give you the antivenom corectly, but treat you promptly and correctly for anaphylaxis if necessary. Would you really want to risk that at Ed's Burger Shack & Community Hospital, or wait until you got to a real hospital, which would probably already have the antivenom?

I don't know about Crofab, but not all AV has to be stored refridgerated. Costa Rican Poly is one that is able to be kept out at room temp.

Sorry gang, I wasn't trying to imply that I was going to give it to myself, nor was I implying that I wouldn't be able to refrigerate it. What I was trying to get at, is the time it takes to get stock to the hospital where I'm being treated, costs tissue. I also was trying to point out that I was aware of the shortages in the past, and yes they're picking up production, however, I didn't want to wait for something to get to my nearest trauma center who may or may not have already had a case in the er and used up their 8 to 12 boxes. So, to say that it's easier to leave the burden to the ER, that's fine if you want to be the unlucky guy who has to wait the 4 to 6 hours for an air delivery. I personally like the assurance that if I have my own stock, it goes to the ER with me and viola, administered in the short amount of time for them to titrate it over the initial 10 minutes to check for allergies, then the 250mL/h afterwards. In essence, just erring on the side of caution. Thanks for the inputs.

P.S. My last post wasn't meant to piss off anyone, just wanted to make my point clearer. Thanks again for a great website. Great information on here. Wish I could find out some ecological info on here though. Is it not standard practice amongst the herpetoculturalists of the "world" to not note the climate, environmentals and long. & lat. of wild caughts? I personally jot all of this info down for any species I come across. I'm waiting now for a repository to dump my access database into for all of my findings.

Dadee,
I'm sure you already know this, but just in case you don't, here goes.... I noticed in your profile that you keep neo's, if you are planning on getting AV, make sure you get Costa Rican Poly for terrificus bites, Crofab shouldn't be an option for those snakes, as they are not part of the mix. And I'm hoping you also know that neo venom is extremely neurotoxic, so have a good bite protocol handy, your breathing ability will go before any tissue does.
Be safe.

Thanks TJ, indeed I do believe in the Costa Rican, and am in the process of sending in for the IND# and the import permit. I do appreciate the concern...and trust me, when I say "I keep my faculties in full check at all times when around the terrificus". I'm not looking to get tagged, but do want to be helpful when it comes to not putting the National Zoo in a bad way by using all of their A/V.
Ciao,
Matt
