Live in N. Alabama mountain top suburban community. Wooded, lots of houses but lots of open leaf cover or brush covered sections between houses. Dog bitten last night by rattlesnake hunkered down in blackberry bushes. Type unknown. Dog will survive but neighborhood in uproar. Need advice, local "expert" opinion all over the place.
1) How wide ranging is the average territory for a single rattlesnake? 10000 sq. meters? (100m X 100m approx) Bigger?
2)Will a snake that has had run-in with dog stick around same bush thicket or move on?
3) Will keeping lawns mowed short really discourage snakes from crossing?
4) Not at war with snakes, but would like to keep them away from house and out of trafficked area of yard. Any suggestions?
5) Yard used to be lousy w/ chipmunks. Haven't seen many around lately. Hmmmmmmmm. Have marvelous pond breeding toads and tree frogs. Am I just asking for rattlesnake visits?
6) Any guess as to what type of rattlesnake it could have been? Heard it rattle but too dark to see. Too dangerous to try to relocate?
Lots of questions. Any answers would be appreciated.

well i live in northeast mississippi there are two types of rattlesnakes you have the timber and the pigmy rattlesnake chances are that the snake is still in the area they dont travel long distances , the snake it most likly is is a timber rattlesnake and I say that cause you stated that you heard it rattle unless you are right on top of or its a very large snake you probably wouldnt have heard it but i may be wrong cause it could have been a pigmy a dog would have more of a chance surviving a pigmy bite but any way as far as keeping them from coming around the only thing you can do is completly elimadate the food source but having a wooded and pond area that would not be possible i would tell the people to just watch there dogs and be carefull outside or try to find some body to come and try to find the snake or snakes and relocate them i know somebody that lives in the florence area i can put you in contact with him if you like my e mail is on my profile i hope all this helps

I don't know if it actually works but Midwest sells a product called Snake-away. Look at www.tongs.com, You should be able to find it there. I am trying to get some co-workers to purchase it becuase they will not stop killing every snake they see every time they see one. Of course I'm only a phone call away but that's more trouble than chopping a rat snakes head off.
