I'm lookng to getting a copperhead, but have just found out from Animal House Pets, in Loganville, GA that I need a license to buy a venomous snake in Georgia, but IF I can find one I can keep it without a license. ANy truth to that? I'm new to the laws regarding hots, and was under a different impression. Anyway, anyone know of a good place to start my wild search for a copperhead near Athens? if anyone in the Atlanta area would have a young healthy copperhead I might be intersted in buying it, but I think I'd get a better experience out of finding my own. anybody have any certain areas that they've caught Coppers in, that they'd be willing to share with me? I don't want to be out wondering forever with no success, and I think I should also say that I've never been out in search of a venomous snake before... the only ones I've been lucky to come across were all by pure luck/chance, and have all been mocassins....

I am not familiar with laws in Georgia but it would seem to me that if you need a license to buy a venomous snake you would also need a license to LEGALLY keep one. Anybody can go find one but keeping it legally is another matter. As for you search I would go in the morning and late afternoon, find some tin, plywood, etc in fields and start flipping. Look inside tree stumps as well. Check your laws before you get a venomous snake. I found the following on Caostal Reptiles website but that doesn't mean the laws haven't changed since that was posted.
Hope this helps, John
Georgia:
Native Venomous: No permit required
Exotic Venomous: Permit required
Protected Native Venomous: None

In Georgia you do not need a permit to keep native venomous.I've also bought native venomous in GA and have never needed a permit.
Oglethorpe county outside of Athens is full of coppers and canebrakes.Go cruise the dirt roads around Lexington.Green county also. Marty

I live in Ga and I have never heared of that you need a lincense for that. A lot of people I know have never needed a license to them at all. I think that is complete BS. By the way be careful about Animal House. Bill has nice snakes but one of my friends just bought 3 burmese pythons and they all died in less than three days!!!! If you live in florida you do need a license for both Native and Exotic, but if you live in Georiga you do not for Native Venomous Only. I would suggest Mardi Snipes's Coastal Reptiles located in SC. Everyone I know who has bought from him have had no promblems. Look at his website at www.coastalreptiles.com to see if there is any coppers availible.
Hope this helps,
Phillip
