When it just starts to get a little cool, I go road cruising because they come out in the morning and the evening to get warm on the warm pavement. I have had lots of luck that way but i usually can't find snakes in fall in the woods. Maybe some do but I don't

Depends on where you are and the weather.
I live in northern mid-atlantic area. A warm humid fall evening can be a bonanza - IF you're in the right place. I once found a road that had never produced anything literally swarming with copperheads on such a night. There is a known den a mile or so away from the spot. The ravine they were coming up is apparently a primary route in and out of the denning area. Right place, right time, lot o' luck. Never found anything there before or since.
You can find large numbers in the fall if you can locate denning areas. Great PHOTOGRAPHY. Just don't take any. If it's July and it's about to get squashed on Interstate 80, fine. The den? No. They're under tremendous pressure. Leave them in peace in their sanctuary.
