I'm curious if anyone knows what kind of snake could have bitten Paul in Acts 28:3 after he was shipwrecked on the Island of Malta. It must have been highly venomous as the natives expected him to did suddenly. It also hung on to him after biting him. References I've tried on the Internet do not list any venomous snakes on Malta.

According to the New Living translation of the bible the incident happened on the island of Malta (Acts 28:1-6). He was gathering up sticks and started a fire, which caused the snake to come out and fasten itself on his hand. He shook the snake into the fire. The islanders expected him to swell up suddenly from the bite and drop dead. But he did not.
The question is that this must have not been a very large snake or he would have seen it in the firewood. It must have been inactive or it would have been moving (the weather was apparently cold and wet because of the need to start a fire). It must bite and hang on. And it must be very deadly. Is there a snake that fits all this criteria?

Even today there are plenty of places where the locals have no idea that there is such a thing as a non-venomous snake... This would explain the snake hanging on, as well as him not dying afterwards...

I wish I had my Bible in front of me, b/c I am not able to offer concrete information. I'm just going off of memory. The snake in reference was in fact a Lebatine or Levatine Viper (Macrovipera). The Bible comments that it's venom is the perspiration of the devil.
Deductive reasoning based on logic does explain a possible solution to how he survived. Being an invdividual who possesses Faith, I believe that it was a venomous snake, and God's love and healing power that saved him.

I agree with taipan, in my bible it says that it was a viper (NKJV) and i think that the bite was symbolic in showing that paul was a man of god and afterwards people come to him to be healed and he was able to do cause he was an instument of god.

Thanks for the information. I found information about the lebetine viper on the Web, which it calls the blunt-nosed viper. The site said it is "the largest European viper. The danger from this snake lies mainly in the extreme speed of its attack and that rather than biting and withdrawing, it keeps its teeth lodged in its target and works its jaws to pump more venom in." Its distribution is mainly North Africa and Asia, but it is found in Europe. Sounds like the characteristics fit the account in Acts.

Actually, I also did some reasearch on this topic and found that out of the snakes that live on the Island of Malta, it is likely that a snake called the Leapord Snake bit him. Go to www.google.com and type in "Poisonous snakes on Malta." Then find the link that leads you to a website called www.shadowservices.com. Click on that and it will give you info. on snakes on the island of Malta and tell you which one they think bit Paul.
Good Luck!
