I am a poor college student looking for the cheapest place to buy tongs that are not going to fall apart. I deal almost exclusively in C. atrox, and am beginning to think that tongs would be a little safer than tailing them with a hook under the head. Any advice as to where to go would be GREATLY apreciated.

Hi:
I can't stress the need for quality equipment. I suggest you buy from Midwest Tongs. High quality, rugged, relyable gear.
Very satisfied user,

My current favorite tongs are the M1 tongs by Midwest. The design is the same as the old Whitneys but Midwests level of quality has been built into them so they are 10 times better. No other companys quality is even close. Don't cheat yourself, buy the M1 tongs and you'll have them for life. Check them out at www.tongs.com

Midwest Tongs cant go wrong with that. If you want cheap you will sacrafice reliability and if you sacrafice that your safty is at risk. Gental giants from midwest i think will run around $70 bucks and that was one of the best investments i ever made.
good luck

By far the best money I've ever spent was on my pair of Gentle Giants. I think you made the smart choice. Not only are they rugged and reliable, but they are way easier on the snake too. My pair just proved themselves yet again today when we snagged a Northern Copperhead from a local spot here. You'll see how handy they become when you stop tailing and use them as your hands.
Good luck,
Matt

I'll just echo the fact that GG's are definitely the best tongs on the market. I have two, one set I own and one a friend left in my position, and they've came in handy a couple times when dealing with larger, highly dangerous venomous snakes. I also own a pair of Mighty Midgets by Genesis Reptiles, and they work very well for small snakes. You obviously wouldn't use GG's on a baby cobra, so that's where the MM's come in. My suggest, buy both! The MM's will also work well on medium-sized viperids, such as copperheads and cottonmouths, and I generally prefer to take them out into the field over the GG's just for the fact that they are easier to manage. There definitely are some good tongs out on the market today, and I believe GG's by Midwest and MM's by Genesis to be the absolute best to suit their specific needs.
