I'm about to force feed one of my snakes and I was wondering what is the best substance to use as food. My vet once told me some kind of baby dog or cat food works. I was wondering what is your opinun.

What species & size?? The problem what dog/cat food is they are very viscus and difficult to push through a syringe and tube. You almost need a caulking gun like the one used at the Miami Serpentarium. Smaller animals I give chicken or beef baby food mixed with a little yogurt to add calcium. Most baby food are low in calcium so you need to add some. This goes through a syringe better.
Best,
Al

Unfortanly it is my 4 ft southern black racer. He has not ate i have decided that I going to release him but I want to down south where I caught him so I have to wait until sunday to do so. I dont think he will last if I dont feed him. My vet gave me the supplies for another species and i still have them. He told me to get baby dog food and delute it down some with water. It worked with the snake that I used to have until it died from internal parasites.. I think my racer has been hit by a car too. I'm really woried about him. I would release him up here but htis is not his natural habitat and I think he would die very quickly up here. He has lost a lot of weight.

Major bummer... If you think it's that critical, then try and get something into him/her. It maybe too late for this one Phillip. If you release it, the snake may not have the reserves to hunt and will expire anyway. At this point, may be better to not release it and force feed it till it gets some weight on.
No good answer to this one. One thing this forum can agree on...is: we all hate to loose an animal this way.
Best,
Al

Sadly today July 28 I found my black racer dead. I was about to force feed him too. I think mabye he was attacked by another animal or hit by a car before I got him. Mainly beacuse most is his bodied is really scared. His scales look very unhealthy. When i go back down south I plan to find another one and capture it.
