Well, I guess it's just that time of year. A copperhead I caught over the summer gave birth last night. I have read that their litters average between one and six babies. Well, she only had one. I kept an eye on her through the night so I could remove any other litter mates but none showed up. Does anyone know if it's fairly common for a copperhead to have only one baby snake. The mother seems to be doing fine. I don't see any abnormal behavior to suggest that she may be in pain and unable to deliver the other possible snakes. I just thought it was strange that there was only one. I also read that copperheads can be cannibalistic. I do not think this happened though because I only missed the birth by about 10-15 minutes. It was very exciting for my wife and I because I didn't even know I had a gravid snake. The neonate seems to be doing well. It is very active. I am going to try to get it to eat this afternoon. By the way, even though the snake is very cute, don't underestimate it. I was putting a small bowl of water in its cage and almost got tagged.
That won't happen again!

You won't be tickling it's chin saying "gooch gooch koo" will ya??
I never had a problem with them eating siblings. Don't be surprised if it takes till at least after it's first shed to eat. You may have to "teast feed" till it gets going.
Congrats!
