Hi guys,
Does it work if you inject a mouse with wormer and feed the loaded mouse to the snake to get rid of parasites? I have sent a fecal sample to my vet so he can tell me what type of parasites my animal may have so I can know what type of wormer to use but i really don't want to try to give the wormer directly to the snake. Any pointers would be helpful. Thanks
Clayton

Ivermectin can be given as an intermuscular injection or orally, so it would be fine. Flagyl (metronidazole) is usually given orally to herps so it should be ok too. I am assuming you are using dead mice and intend to inject it under the skin.

hi your vet will know what to do when he finds out what your snake has got, normally when treating internal parasites they are treated by some kind of oral treatment for example paste or pill , a vet may be able to give you somthing in which you can cover a mouse with such as paste, some parasites such as coccidia are often treated intramusculary, an injection in the muscle. the problem is a parasite with an direct life cycle has the potential of reinfecting its host over again thats the problem with snakes if there wild caught.
the vet will know what parasite it is and know what and how to treat it , as i say some can be treated by paste so you might be able to cover a mouse with it instead of direct treatment.
hope this helps
SHAUN.

I don't know but when I got my dogs stools tested, it was 12 bucks so I don't expect it would be much more to test snake scat. I am going to call right now and I can let you know for sure.

Hey disciple, I just talked with my vet. It is $23.50. More than I ever paid for a dog or a cat, I'll tell you that. But it is worrth it.

Once again guys: From the post on "Worming"
I bought this book that Chris Harper reviewed:
Understanding Reptile Parasites : A Basic Manual for Herpetocultists
Chris is right on the money...it's a must have if you want healthy animals. Tells you how to do it and what to give. Even gives you dosage information. It cost me $8.95 from amazon.com. For what we spend on snakes this is a no brainer.
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/reviews/review/280
IT TELLS YOU ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!!! but to make if brief....Flagyl can be injected into the snakes food, as can Pancur. Pancur is the prefered worming agent for reptiles according to this Vet. It's most effective with minimal side effects.
The alternate way to give the drugs is by feeding tube which means being very close to fangs controlled by a very pissed off snake!
Everybody who keeps reptiles should own this book!
