Bothrops atrox vs. Bothrops asper:
The single best character to distinguish them is the dark postocular stripe: In B. atrox, it is usually fairly broad and encroaches on the last three supralabials (covering more than half of the last), whereas in B. asper, it is narrow and usually only encroaches on the last supralabial (of which it covers less than half).
B. venezuelensis differs most obviously in having a rounded snout (seen from above - much more pointed in B. atrox and B. asper), and a belly that is heavily pigmented with fine black speckles, whereas B. atrox and B. asper have a more or less obvious dark checkerboard pattern. Juveniles can be more difficult to distinguish. Surprisingly, B. venezuelensis is actually not at all closely related to B. atrox and B. asper.
Cheers,
Wolfgang
