Hello to all. I have just come in from feeding. I was given a rather spectacular show by a yearling Crotalus atrox. The young C. atrox struck out almost his entire body lenth to envenomate a mouse. I have been told in the past that the old 2/3 body length strike range does not apply to feeding strikes. I have seen this happen before but it very impresive and serves and a STRONG REMINDER to safety proceedures. After all there was a passage in Findlay Russell's Snake Venom Poisoning about a herpetologist that was killed by an 82cm mojave rattler who struck him at 84cm distance. I have also seeen A young C. Helleri strike his entire body lenth at an upward plane while I was feeding the snake right next to his enclosure. If anyone else would like to share examples of this I would be very interested in hearing them. It only serves to remind (and sometimes with a sudden involuntary spincter contracting effect)us all of the potential of the animals we have chosen to keep. Thanks J.S.

Good point Parcelmouth:
I was reminded of the same sort of this about two weeks agao when my ~24 in Gabby struck across more than half the distance of the Vision cage (28Wx24Dx12H)she is in to pick off a chick' on my forceps. My jaw was on the floor after that one. I did not think she had that much range.

I have 2 baby atrox that still just have thier button. Both of which will literally leave the floor as they strike at the pinkies I drop on the other end of the cage. WELL past the length of thier bodies. My adults and the adults I catch in the wild rarely striek out far, but after watching these youngins and hearing what ya'll have to say, I think I'll be a little more careful in the field.
