Need some opinions on what would be the best substrate for Copperheads. I currently have them on smooth river rock (for drainage of urine) and oak leaves. I have read where cypress mulch is good. I bought a bag and it is really loaded with moisture. Would I be better to keep them on their current substrate (dry) or go ahead and switch to the cypress mulch. Their enclosures are 24L X 12W X 12T. They have a 16" X 4" vent in the upper back of the enclosure, temps run from mid 70`s to mid 80`s. I have also read snakes can become impacted with mulch, I don`t have that worry with my current set-up. Plus, I feed FT mice on a plastic dish. I am probably a worry wart, but they have done really well for wild caught, and I don`t want to screw them up. Many THANKS in advance.

I do use cypress mulch, Mine was also wet when I bought it, but combined with a heat lamp, it gives excellent humidity and will eventually dry. Copperheads seem to thrive in any "Safe" substrate. Do not use cedar chips though(you probably already knew that) Good luck....Jeremy.

I've used cypress mulch with my Copperhead and never had a problem with it. I change it out about every 3 months. Don't buy the stuff in the pet stores, go to Lowe's or Home Depot. They have 50 pound bags for about 5 dollars.

Hmmmm...one problem...snakes don't produce urine..their nitrogenous waste is eliminated in the form of Uric acid crystals. The white/yellow material mixed in with the feces.
Best,
Al
