Hi, Over the years ive noticed that every pit viper Ive caught has two little black dots on the back of there head. Its right on the middle of there head between the eyes. They are on the biggest scales on the back of there head.

That's the programming interface used by the Aliens that visit Alabama on Tuesdays & Thursdays! Ther're in Pennsylvania on Mondays & Wednesday.
Actually I have no idea. I can't imaging any reason why they would or would not be there.

i looked at all of the crotalinae photos. And from my own observations found that Agkistrodon contortrix, Agkistrodon piscivorous, Crotalus horridus horridus, and Crotalus horridus atricaudatus are the only species that have the dots. Maybe I AM on to something.

Hello, Thanks alot you guys you got me up till 11:00pm digging thru some old books. I found reference to the dark spots on the parietal scales of Agkistrodon contortrix coloration and pattern in Snakes of the Agkistrodon Complex (page 114) also shown in the drawing and can be seen in the color plates in several diffrent A.contortrix subspecies. I can not find any mention of them other than pattern. Looking at the plates they seem more defined on the younger snakes. The dots can also be seen on many pictures of canebrakes in Manny Rubio's Rattlesnake Portrait of a Predator. I would be interested to hear if any one else has anything else to add. Also In reference to the other post of the uniquely colored cottonmouth, On plates 10 and 11 of Snakes of the Agkistrodon Complex show a reddish brown(plate 11) and a positively bright orange youngster (pale 10) Cool stuff, and interesting question.
Later,
J.S.

Hey BushViper, I took a closer look at one of my NoseHorned Vipers` head and it also has those black spots wich coppers, cottons and canebreaks have. What`s wierd is that this viper is a Viperinae mamber, it`s not a pit viper. This deserves some research.

Hi snake17, I agree. Someone needs to research it. I dont have the tools but will keep taking notes. If you see anyother snake with black dots I would like to know. Thank you.....Jeremy.
