Hi all. A friend of mine was bitten by a Mastigodryas boddaerti (18 year old male, 55 to 60 kgs) like two weeks ago, he had no sympthoms but a light swelling and there was no pain. 3 days ago he was bitten again and no sympthoms, but aprox. 48 hours later the hand began to swell and pain appeared, he called me and he claims that his hand is swollen (the size is 15% to 20% bigger than the other hand according to him) he also says that he hand is red and was turning blue before a professor told him to take antihistamines. He says that the pain has increased a bit but thinks that the swelling stopped. What complications could be expected? What else can be done to help? thx to all.

Sounds to me like he picked up an infection from the bite. Not something fun to deal with, and it often causes painful itching and swelling of the area. Have him go in and see his doctor to find out what bacteria is causing the infection, and then hopefully the doctor will prescribe the correct antibiotics. If he does get a presciption for antibiotics, it is extremely important that he take the full dosage given as prescribed, or the infection may return worse than before.
