Hi, Do you have to go to college to go anywhere with studying wildlife. I want to be a herpetologist but I dont have money. If I dont have money I cant go to college and therefor I cant get a job doing what I love. Is there anyway to work with reptiles without college.

I seriously doubt you can accomplish much without college. People without money generally get student loans. I would start with some loan applications and see what you can come up with.

Look around at some colleges and Universities around your area (or whereever you would be willing to live). Then look at which ones have good biology programs. Meet and talk to some of the professors there and discuss what the requirements are to get in the college. Take your ACT or SAT and apply for financial aid. If you want a wildlife job, you'll pretty much have to go to college to learn all the things you need to learn. You may come out with some college debt but atleast you'll have a degree and no one can take that away. People can take away your house, car, etc... even after it costs you a lot of money. But no one can take away your education.

I went to college in 1994 with 3 shirts, 2 pair of pants and a tooth brush. I had to work my butt off, but I made it thru. In the US if you want to go to college you can. You just have to have the intestinal fortitude to get it done. The only thing that limits you is you. However, bare in mind the life of herpetologist is not a rich one. Most barley earn a living. Make sure that is what you want to do. I do my day job for my living and I keep, breed, and hunt snakes in my free time and I love it.

I have recently got through with my undergrad and I had an excellent professor. He tought me an awful lot about herps, and he went the right way about doing it. If you won't some detailed information about this, email me at will_coley@comcast.net. I'd be happy to help you out.
