Hi, I'm just replying to ask if you want to herp sometime. I would love to catch somemore mouths. I dont know the answer to your question though. If you live close to the mississippi border you should have both (If I remember correctly) I have two cottonmouths also and I dont know whether there eastern or western. Well, good luck.

Alabama is another one of those odd states that isn't clear cut as far as the sub-species go. Alabama is home to the Florida, Eastern and Western varieties. With that there is naturally a lot of intergrades thus making individual determination somewhat rough at times. Unfortunately, I don't have a breakdown of Alabama's moccasin ranges so I can't specifically tell you what you are looking at, but generally the Eastern variety (piscivorous) dominates the Northern part of the state. Don't hold me to anything definitive, as I don't have anything in front of me to verify it for you. I would try getting a hold of something from your local Fish and Game.

According to Conant, Alabama has all three, however, the western is the one with the largest range in Alabama. Piscivorus conanti enters the state just above the Florida panhandle, the eastern just north of that. Leucostoma covers all of the state except the southeastern & east central portions of the state.
So..any cottonmouth you find in the northern part of the state ought to be the western.
