Kent Parson appeared in a Toronto court yesterday for sentencing regarding infamous Toronto saw-scaled
viper incident.
Mr. Parson received the following sentence:
$500 fine for possession of a tarantula
$1500 fine for the possession (and escape) of a saw-scaled viper
$1000 fine for the possession of each of 13 venomous species he had
TOTAL -- $15,000 (CDN)
He has one year to pay this sum. Kent also received two years' probation.
The City was satisfied with the judgement.

The guy is in violation of the law but this may disuade others from coming foward if they have an escapee.

Dang. That is pretty steep. And John LePage is right. This will definitely keep anyone else from coming forward and saying, "Oh by the way, if you see a Black Mamba in your yard, it's mine." It's too bad the city government couldn't see that.
This is a big reason that I am a proponent of accreditation and voluntary accountability. If I go over to someone's house and see a Saw-Scaled viper being kept in a critter keeper with a loose lid, it makes me think there really ought to be a set standard. Like I've said before, if we don't police ourselves, they will do it for us.
I think I can say that as I live in the state of Georgia that won't allow me to even have a Mangrove snake without a $235 license and $1,000,000 liability insurance. Which by the way works out to around $3,500 a year. If your state doesn't have any regulations regarding venomous snakes, consider yourself lucky, but don't think it will last forever. For me, it's too late. As it is for several other states, and many that live within certain city limits. Once a law is passed, it is nearly impossible to repeal it.
I do my best to work with the local government. As a matter of fact, this morning I got called up to city hall to remove a water snake. Anything to get on their good side! I don't want them to get any ideas about new "city ordinances". The local Game warden is one of my biggest supporters by the way.
