Ryan, is it true 100mg/kg of Panacur will eliminate cestodes, my connections tell me this is true!! Which means Droncit is cut out of the pic. Also, I heard that there's a drug that cover's Flagyl and Panacur, thanks Mardi. Tim

Yes Panacur does kill SOME tapeworms - but only the Taenia species. The good news is, Taenia sps. are the most common tapes found in herps, the bad is that it has NO effect on the other tape species. If you want to be sure, you really need to use praziquantel(Droncit). It is not uncommon to treat conservatively with Panacur and only use Droncit when Panacur has already been given, and tapeworm segments are beeing seen in the stool (remember that tapeworm infections are rarely seen in fecal floats).
As for the other question about there being a drug that covers all that metronidazole and fenbendazole cover, Im not sure. Many sulfa drugs have good action on many protozoans, and some helminths, but Im not sure of any specific drug that does it all.
See if you can find out what the name of it is, and I will gladly do some research myself.
Good to hear from you - missed you at the show/banquet

Did some more research, but still could find no info on the new drug you asked about. We still use metro/panacur/droncit for all our antiparasitic issues.
Keep me posted.

Thanks Ryan, I'll ask Mardi, he turned me on to it. Do you have a good egg chart(detailed), I could get my hands on. I have some, but I'm always looking for something more detailed. Here's a weird question ya, just thinking out loud. What would happen if I mixed Panacur and Flagyl together and then did my oral, would there be a chemical reaction that might be harmful to the reptile? Let's say I was dosing 100mg/kg of each, could I mix them together and do a 200mg/kg of total oral injection? How much sterile water would you recommend I use. I've done both before, just trying to save a step. Is this safe? Right now I use powder, would liquid matter? I don't make many club events, to far north, I wish I could though. Thanks Ryan, you're making my life easier. Tim

I doubt that mixing the 2 drugs together would screw anything up, but let me double check that tomorow. Sometimes the suspensions or vehicles used in combination with the active drug may cause activation problems. Will double check.
If you are dosing orally, using sterile water is unnecessary. Remember that the inside of a snakes gut is still considered a "surface" area (exposed to the elements), and sterility is not an issue. It wont hurt to use sterile water, but tap is free (or damn near).
I am very interested in hearong about the drug Mardi is refering to. Let me know once he fills you in. (and tell him to start answering his emails =))

Glad its down time.

Wonderful news. How much H2O would you rec. I use. What about cryptosporidium in the water, that's why I mentioned sterile, or bacteria free water. What does you're clinic dose, for Flagyl and Panacur? Also, do you have very detailed egg charts, or can you turn me on to a place that might have them?? Thanks, Tim.

Again Tim, the thing to keep on mind is that the gut is not a sterile serface area. If your herps drink tap h20 from a dish, than they stand the same chances of getting crypto that way as they do being tube dosed with anthelmintics. I understand your concearns, but unless you intend to inject drugs (sub cut, intra musc, intra periton, etc.) sterile water is not needed.
As for the doses, we generally use the same ones you have been using (100mg/kg - but let me double check before you quote me on that - after doing it so long I we tend to sometimes just look at a snake, or weigh it, and just think; "ok this snake needs .6 cc Panacure ...)
And for the egg chart; I cant think of one that includes most of the herp parasite eggs on a complete chart. I can reccomend some books with good photos in them though. I will research a bit and see if any of our dealers/distributors have any good charts with any herp parasites (although most commercialy available charts are generally limited to dog/cat/horse/cattle parasite eggs).
I should be able to let you know something on the availability of any charts by Wed. evening.
