I guess this topic is finally something that I could possibly be an expert at.
I joined the Southeastern Hot Herp Society in April 1999. I paid my dues and have remained an active member ever since.
The website (venomousreptiles.org) took off and gets lots of people who come and log on. A site member is basically anyone who fills out a profile (however spare or grudgingly) and posts something on the site.
A society member is someone who has sent in dues to join the society. Membership benefits have included a subscription to our quarterly newsletter, patches, decals and invitations to members only field trips.
We are currently rebuilding our newsletter set-up and are not set up to receive new members until that is resolved. We have society members from countries all over the world and including people from all walks of life - from PHD venom toxicologists to housewives and students. The range of expertise goes from people who have never kept venomous snakes through people who have studied every written text they could get their hands on to people who have kept and bred almost any reptile that can be named. I have even sat through lectures on how to successfully keep Fea's Vipers which just isn't easy no matter how many are getting currently imported.
I believe, but could be wrong by some small amount, that our society membership fluctuates somewhere between 150 and 200 while site membership is probably closer to 4 or 500.
