On 11/19/04 a posting in the classifieds states:Bob aka mambaseller1 has been killed by his cottonmouth.I want everyone to say a prayer to whatever god you believe in! Bob will be missed and never forget how easy it is to mess up and die in our hobby. Don't think it is only a copperhead or cottonmouth, you can die!!!! Treat your charges with care and remember your fellow herper's. Rest in peace BOB you died doing what you loved!
Here's where I feel very passionate about my dealings with my hots. I DO NOT EVER, put my hands near the snakes...never will you see me tailing a snake. Unless, I have tongs in my hands coupled with a hook (for body support), I don't pick up any of my vens. With that being said, I know that our community has a vast majority that does "tail". I'm not condemning anyone for their beliefs of what is safe or unsafe. If you feel the need to tail your snakes, by all means, continue, with this one classified in mind. I for one, will continue my practice of using my tools.
Even when it comes to feeding time, my 2' tongs are used on the mice, even though my enclosures are severely long (2x's the body lengths of my longest natives), I still don't put my hands or my body in harms way. Precaution on my part will no doubt drop my chances of getting tagged, even if it is in the smallest of percentages. Taking these kind of steps towards lessening my chances of getting bit, doesn't rule out the possibility all together of that fateful graze or blow, but does impact the way I view and feel toward my snakes. I love them dearly, but have a profound respect for their capabilities. I know that my snakes do "recognize" me, from the way they approach the front of the enclosures upon my entry into my hot room. I also know, given the chance, they would unleash a painful experience, that a few people in our community have encountered.
Take this bit of information with a grain of salt, as it is only my way of keeping safe. I don't want to give the impression that those who tail their snakes, are wrong in any way. I just want to give those people who are looking for "safety" advise, another view on best practices. Please take care of your snakes and yourselves.
Thanks,
Matt

Has there been a news article on this? I checked his profile information and it said Oxford, PA, but I have not seen any news out of there about it yet. If anyone has any links to news articles, it would be much appreciated. He gave me advice via email fromt ime to time and he'll be missed.

mambaseller was not killed technically by the cottonmouth but by an infection in the blood caused by the bite because it was not treated correctly. No ambulance was called so the papers have no word on this and that is the way he wanted from day one he said if he was ever bitten not to call attention to the fact because it is bad for the hobby. If you keep in mind the hospitals in the northeast do not get alot of snake bites it will scare you more the the pain or other aspects of the bite itself. He also lived in Md. not Pa. so be safe and remember just because you get medical attention it may not be the right attention. I was close to Bob and knew him and his family and he will be missed but both of his boys still are in love with snakes and were old enough to know he loved what he did and that helps them at this time.

I am very sorry that you lost a close friend in Bob. I was just curious about what happened to him. It is a great misfortune to everyone who knew him. I never talked to Bob, and for those who knew him, I wish you all peace and comfort..

I had done business with bob several years ago...I wonder if this is true????
I saw he posted an ad after he was bitten saying he would be @ hamburg but one arm wasn't working because of the bite....
Presumably he had a complication well after he was released from the hospital??? if this is even true...I hate to be a doubting Thomas but...hmmm...

To give Biff some credit, Bob, aka mambaseller, has scammed at least one person to my knowledge. He did a trade with someone who shipped him snakes first. He responded by shipping that person an empty box, then avoiding his calls. It isn't wholly unheard of for a person to 'die' just to drop out of sight when they've committed crimes. This, combined with the fact that nothing has been in the news, even if he didn't go to a hospital, makes me curious as well to the validity of this.

Come on guys the guy has passed. As far as the news goes let me just say again Bob did not die of snakebite but of a blood infection due to improper handling of the bite if they put all the people that pass away in the paper or on the news there would not be room for more. As for the saying he ripped people off I hope the owners of this site will let people know if someone is not here to defend themselves anything can be said. I am sure his wife and children will not get wind of this they have moved to WV. and this website will be the least of their problems. She has asked me to thank reticbite and all the others for their kindness and as for the others I hope you sleep better at night for saying bad things of someone who cannot disagree with you.
